If you received a LOA, what kind of grades do you have to maintain? Obviously you cant just give up, but I'm assuming you can loosen up to some degree.

I don't want to answer a question with a question but this begs one....why would you "loosen up"? You've got an LOA which demonstrates something to WP , so finish strong and validate their faith and confidence in you. Further, you're going to need that kind of attitude to do well at WP...that ain't going to be high school anymore when it comes to studying and academics.

Objective response: the consensus on these boards is that, as long as you don't earn a D or an F, a LOA won't be rescinded.

But here's are even better reasons to keep up the academic rigor: grades of A and B signify, at least partly, that you mastered concepts and ideas that are important in those courses, and those concepts and ideas are a foundation for the work you'll do at one of the SAs. Keeping up your GPA also demonstrates that you have a habit of excellence, even when you're not working TOWARD some goal any more and nobody's looking. That's a strong mark of developing character - and I don't mean the throwaway definition of character.

Let's not be too critical. Senioritis is a well-known and widespread occurence. Anyone who graduated from High School has been afflicted with it. I absolutely understand the desire to take a breather, enjoy your Senior year, and relish your accomplishments so far. However, I encourage you to finish strong. There are other goals that should spur you on to finish on a high academic note such as graduation honors and recognitions. Also, you need to prepare yourself for the academic rigors of WP. You don't want to get mental atrophy.

Congrats on your LOA! Army Strong!

Putting the actual letter grade aside..... you want to learn everything you can in Calc, Chem, Physics, English so that the material in those subjects is easier to comprehend when they are getting jammed down your throat at WP 2x the speed they were in high school. Learn it to understand it, not for the grade. Of course if you understand it.... good grades will follow.

I thought you take placement tests at the start and if you do well on them they either throw you in a harder class or let you skip the class and take something else.

A LOA does not guarantee an appointment, so I think it is too early to be asking that. Remember if you do get an appointment and accept, your competition at WP will be those who are among the 'best/brightest' of their graduating class who most likely excel due to their excellence and drive to succeed. The journey is just beginning once you accept your appointment.

I can't add anymore to whats been said, which I totally agree with. WP is a pressure cooker, I don't think you understand how much pressure you'll be under while you are there and its content for the next 47 months and that includes your summers also. You'll be expected to carry an academic load of 21 units at a minimum.

OK, I get it... senior year, blah blah blah

But you aren't planning to attend Local State U; your desire is USMA. And you are going to take some pretty difficult courses come August.

If you want to slack on Health or Shop or Chorus, you have fencersmother's permission.
