Major Change Advice

For what it's worth, my DS did receive permission to change his major and ADM. Just following up in case any other cadet finds himself in the same situation.

Great news, best of luck to him.

To clarify one point, Aglahad - he didn't "drop out of premed as a freshman" - he is a junior with 80 semester hours and a 4.0. It isn't about his lack of ability to do the work or suddenly finding out that premed is difficult, but about his desire to major in something that actually interests him and that he feels will be more applicable to his Army service.

I will update as he should find something out in the next few days. There is now apparently some discussion among the cadre as to whether his current major is ADM 2 or 3 - there appears to be significant overlap. He has to register for Spring semester in a week or so though, so he needs to get a decision fairly quickly.

Thanks again for all the responses.

I didn't assume he quit for academic reasons, many realize that the "idea" of being a doctor(or for some the prestige of being a doctor) isn't like House or Grey's Anatomy and the gruelling path to get there simply isn't what they want. That's fine.

As for anthropology being more applicable to the army I disagree (I took 3 anthro classes in college for gen eds) but hey to each their own. I feel each major brings something unique to the table if career army is your thing.

Congrats on the approval

Kinnem - the permission was granted by his PMS, who quoted a reg that states 1 major change is allowed - but 1 only. As far as I know brigade was never involved. If I learn differently I will update of course.

Aglahad - I agree that all majors have the potential to contribute valuable insights to an Army career. In my son's particular case, he feels the focus on peoples and cultures will be more practically applicable than, say, the immunology and virology classes he would be taking next semester if he stayed in his present major. I am hopeful that he will still reap the benefits of having 80 hours' credit in a hard science major - the Anthro background will simply give him more tools in his box for the future.

Thanks jcc123. That's good to know. Sounds like the PMS was creative but in any case I'm really glad all worked out well for your son. Best of luck to you both. I know it's a big relief.... and it sounds like it all happened in time to sign up for the proper classes next semester!
