DS has completed application, all items on portal show complete, CFA complete, DoDMERB qualified (actually 3Q'd at USNA, already had BGO interview). Question: What is role of MALO? He hasn't been contacted by anyone. Is he supposed to contact MALO for interview?

A MALO is basically someone who can help a cadet candidate during their application to West Point. Similiar to a BGO at Navy.

Based on what I see on this forum USMA does not require interviews by MALOs.

Contacting admissions will get you the name and info about a MALO.

I'm assuming your son is applying to Navy and Army, right?

Being Friday afternoon - I am going to be lazy and refer you to this link instead of writing it again.

That said - some candidates will not have an interview simply because there may not be a MALO/FFR for your area.
Because of that reason, MALO/FFR interviews are not points earning.

If you would like to see if there is one in your area, send me a PM with your State and Congressional District and I will look it up for you.

Congratulations to your son for completing his file early!! :thumb:

Thanks for the info. DS is applying to both.

One other data point: Even if there is a MALO for your area, apparently some SLS interviews are used in place of MALO interviews. (don't know if it is the drag's eval, or something else).

That is not correct. Unless the SLS interview is excellent (which most are far from), the RC will ask that the candidate be re-interviewed by a MALO or FFR. SLS interviews are conducted by cadets and thus are generally not well-received by the RC and his staff.

MALO is a term that is quickly falling into disuse. There are up to 300 MALO billets available in the USAR. Currently, roughly 60 are filled. The FFRs do the vast majority of admissions work now.

May not be the case most of the time, but I have firsthand knowledge of 2 cases where no MALO/FFR interview was scheduled or required even though there was a MALO assigned.

When the candidates inquired as to whether they needed to schedule a MALO/FFR interview the answer from admissions was the interview took place at SLS.

I don't think this invalidates your point that in most cases, SLS interview are probably not used and candidates need to count on a separate formal interviews.

Likewise, it appears that the interview is not a formal requirement to the extent it is for USNA & USAFA as there is not a "checkoff" item on the application portal. But just from observation it would seem like it's in the candidates advantage to have one.
