March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board

So glad VMI extended some scholarship help. I'd heard they were very helpful, DS's adult friends were willing to write letters and all that...and yes, working a little longer(OT when available)is in the cards anymore for all colleges now adays. After all your encouraging posts, glad to hear it is all working out for you and yours.[/QUOTE
The financial aid office actually has a set policy of a % compared to the EFC # from the FAFSA that they go by for out of state students. Your friend is correct. We aren't wealthy and can still manage it, which is amazing to me. They were spot on for us according to their formula. I will say that Norwich did offer him more $$ because his academics met their Deans Scholarship criteria, but he was just under the cut for VMI's institute scholar program. Most of the stats I've seen posted here would qualify for those types of financial aid. ROTC is still possible yet too..tomorrow is the big day:eek: Just glad we have ducks in a row either way. Praying for positive results during their decision making tomorrow.

Hello all...our DS is waiting as well, but this board will be the first time that he's been looked at.

I have a question that one of you may know the answer to - he just got a letter from his #1 school choice (it's OOS) today that he has been awarded an academic scholarship which reduces his tuition to the IS rate plus an additional $4000 off per year. In light of the current economic times, is this something that we should make the board aware of since it reduces the cost by a bunch?

And btw, he hasn't been contacted to get physically qualified (maybe because he's not applying to any of the academies?) - but based on the previous posts, maybe it's because he's too tall - 6'4"?! and his feet are too big - size 13?!

OK, how do you know if you have been looked at on any of the previous boards?

In most cases, not all, if he gets ROTC money the other scholarships are rescinded and go back into the schools kitty for other students. I asked about our son receiving additional local scholarships and the answer was he could have a limit($2000) applied to his account and anything over that amount would mean a different financial offer from the school. It worked that way for 2 schools that we looked into anyway.
I suggest you pose that question to financial aid at his school because their policy may be different. The scholarships he received were academic, not ROTC yet

Typically, if you had application and all supporting documents in prior to the cut off for the board, you were reviewed by the next board. Cut off for January board was 12/20, the final cut off for applications to be started on line was 1/10, final cut off for documents for March board 2/28. There was a Fall board, October, but do not remember the cut off for documents. Some of our DS/DD have been involved in both previous boards and been rolled to this final one too. Yeah, my DS has been board ready since July 2010. Its been a long wait.

Thanks! In that case I guess this will be my DS's 3rd board to since he has been board ready since early Oct. Good thing I don't bite my fingernails! Best wishes to all!

I feel your pain...this has been a LOOOOONNNGGGG winter. Never thought we would not have an answer one way or the other by now. Last year DS friends were all notified and set way before this, different branches though for most of them. I would hope CC tries to get the info out well before the May 1 decision date for most schools. Otherwise I wouldn't want the job of the person that handles the transfer requests...yikes:shake:

@ bjkuds - thanks for the info; we will check with the school.
@ jmbm - I see Ohio2015Parent answered your question. My DS didn't get his app in until early January, so he's only being boarded this one time.

From what everyone has posted, this is a hurry up and wait...and wait...and wait...I can't imagine having waited since last summer or fall, my hat's off to all of you for hanging in there that long.

Here's to a quicker notification after this board ends (does anyone know how long they meet?)...:beer1:

Ht 5'10" WT 200 shoe size 10.5 ex football player...works out everyday.

His height/weight ratio might be a problem. Maximum weight for a 5'10 male is 180lbs. Of course they can do the BMI test as well but I would get him to do lots of cardio between now and August if he gets a scholarship.

Cheers!! Good question..hopefully they are done by lunch:yllol:

Love the beer smiley!!! Praying we all have lot's of good reasons for using that sometime before Easter(April 24). Unfortunately, we all know the board will meet thru the end of the week, reviewing the last batch of applicants and producing a rough OML, they can't do anymore than that until the January boards answers are returned(although with less choices offered to them, hopefully they get them in quickly-love you all but mail 'em, mail 'em, mail 'em:thumb:) Then we have to pray there is no government shut down on or around 3/18 so the civillian workers are in the offices to process all the replies and get the next results(ours)posted in some sort of timely fashion(ie before Easter).:shake:

Taping (to measure BMI) is quite common with athletes in sports requiring more strength than speed. Not generally a problem (from out experience). The specs are available on line.

He started running in January. He could not run during football...had to keep the weight up which was hard for him...he played center. His weight might be down some but not to 180. We spoke to a couple of ROO's about the height/weight issue for him and they did not seem to think it would be a problem. You can look at him and tell he is all muscle. BMI test should not be a problem.

20lbs above eh upper limit is stretching it unless the muscle mass is extremely high. My DS is in the same boat, built for strength from football training. He is about 6'3" and 210lbs right now be he plans toning up a bit to get inside the 206lb limit for his height. He is also extremely big boned.

My advice would still be spend more time on the cardio and drop a little before getting on campus.

Thanks FloridaDad. I will tell him less pumping iron...more running and not so many protein shakes.

Goaliegirl is 10% (not polite to discuss specific weight) over the max weight for her height and tapes just fine. Sounds very similar to the situation at hand. Not an issue.

ROTC does NOT want you to sacrifice your Athletics (big part of SAL) to make weight. All the football players at the academies get past the height/weight issue just fine during season and then reduce off-season. There are ways to manage this situation. Contact the Cadre at your top school for details.

Get a tape measure and look up the charts (available on several websites) and see if he qualifies by tape before doing anything to change his training regimine to see if there actually IS an issue.

Hopefully Clarkson or Marist will chime in here to add their experience...

I'm in

8 March 2011...here we go....again!

Suggested to DS last night he ask first choice school about remaining scholarships/number awarded etc. He declined said he already knew someone with the answers. Ah, "The Guy with cattle on a thousand hills?," I asked. Love it when my kids have more faith than I do.

March 8th - here we are!
DS is spending the day with a cadet at his #1 choice today. I am thinking it is Providence that it worked out to be the same day that the board is convening.
