At the public swearing in today, all the groups were arranged tallest to shortest. However, later we saw individual flights marching around the campus after athletics and they didn't seem to be arranged that way. We actually spotted our tall son marching in the last row on the right next to two tiny female cadets as they were coming from some activity on the athletic field. We wondered why. Does this signify anything? Did he get in trouble? Had he been helping the smaller females on the field in a team event? The rest of the formation didn't seem quite as random.

Your DS might have been made a road guard, which would explain why he was in the rear of the formation. A road guard stops the traffic when they cross a road going to places like the field house for intramural or in the case today the AFT. It is not a punishment or anything like that. Just something that has to be done. Hope that helps.

Wow! Thanks! My husband didn't even know why and he is an '85 grad. Great info!

I actually am guessing he was the flight chief. The cadre pick one basic to be "in charge" of the flight temporarily. It gives them a chance to try some peer leadership. They do not have much power, or any power really, but are kind of the spokesperson. This person marches in the exact position you described. It is a good thing. It means the cadre see promise in your son and want to challenge him, however it is a tough position for some if they are not ready for it. Usually it is given to a prior enlisted or prep school basic. I got this info from being flight cadre last summer, so it is possible but unlikely that things have changed
