Hi all,

Is it possible for me to apply for the NROTC scholarship (Marine Option) as a freshman in college? I am currently attending the University of Richmond. Thanks for the input!

You must have completed fewer than 31 academic units at Richmond ir any other college, to be eligible.

You do know that the University of Richmond does not have a NROTC program. So you would need to apply and be awarded a scholarship and apply to and be accepted to a college that has a NROTC program.

But you probably already knew that :)

Some additional information. Directly from the NROTC web site http://www.nrotc.navy.mil/entrance_requirements.html

Students with 30 or more semester hours or students with 45 or more quarter hours of college credit upon submission of the online application are not eligible for the NROTC National Scholarship. It is recommended that these students contact the Professors of Naval Science at the Host University's NROTC Unit to discuss other scholarship opportunities.
  • College credits do not count until an applicant has graduated high school and completed a term of college; then all college credits earned (prior to and after high school graduation) count towards the eligibility requirements.
  • If you are a high school graduate and complete a term of college prior to submitting your application, all college credits earned (in high school and in college) are counted towards the credit limit.
  • If you are a high school graduate and are enrolled in college, all college credits anticipated to be earned by June of the application year (defined as April to January) will count towards the credit limit.

I am planning on transferring. I am currently on a 4 year Army ROTC scholarship here at Richmond.
Some of the schools I want to transfer to only offer NROTC.

As others have posted yes. If you have any questions about the experience, my son went through that path. His MOI was actually on the early board, knew my son, gave input -- and it was a quick board. The RS called him the beginning of Christmas break with the good news.

You'll also have the bonus of being in consideration for a sideload scholarship.

Just work hard in the unit, establish yourself, keep your grades up, and get a high first class PFT.
