Hey guys, I need some big time help. I just received a 4 year NROTC Marine Option Scholarship to... the wrong school. I checked the box while filling it out that said something along the lines about only wanting the scholarship to my number one choice which is The Citadel. I got the scholarship to UNC. I'm happy about that and I have a UNC application open, just not finished. Now what do I do? I would love to go to UNC, so I am going to call the admissions office tomorrow as soon as they open. My question is, do you think explaining to them that I have an 4 year NROTC Marine Option scholarship will help me out? I really hope it does. If anyone can give any input, I will be forever grateful. Thanks so much!

Contact the detachment tomorrow! They know the ins and outs of admissions and financial aid offices. They should be able to answer all your questions. Congrats by the way.:thumb:

Thanks for the congrats! I'm just nervous about them letting me finish my application after the deadline. I have a feeling it will work out, but I would be absolutely crushed if I let this opportunity go by the wayside.

I assume you are talking about Chapel Hill. My DS and I visited last year and met with LT Daryl Meeks in the NROTC office. He told us at that time that the ROTC office has no input and/or "pull" with the Admissions office at UNC. He said that some universities will take "admission requests" from ROTC but that UNC does not. He also told us that if you are selected for a scholarship to UNC and you have not been accepted, you will need to ask NROTC for a transfer to your next-highest college on your list.

I do not mean to discourage you from checking with the UNC Admissions Office and/or LT Meeks, just giving you a heads-up that UNC is not quite like other universities.

Maybe you could ask NROTC to transfer your scholarship to The Citadel?

    Good luck!

I just got off the phone with someone at the NROTC office, I didn't catch his name though. He told me they don't have pull with admissions and since, by law, they can only accept 18% out of state applicants (including athletes) it would be incredibly difficult to get in with everything on time, and it will be nothing short of a miracle to get the admissions board to help me out. But nevertheless, to give them a call regardless. He said I could ask them (UNC NROTC and the NROTC board in Pensacola) to transfer the scholarship to The Citadel, but since I was not given that scholarship they are most likely full, so my scholarship would be waitlisted and I would have to wait until a slot opens up. I would honestly rather have been rejected than to have a full 4 year scholarship go to waste.

    Wondering

Don't know how this works, but my question is wouldn't there be some other school that would be available for transfer that you would also like to attend?

I would call The Citadel first thing in the morning to see if they are full...it would be a shame to let the scholarship go to waste - what about the other schools on your list?

BTW, I'm curious - what did you score on your PFT?

That is a question I will ask the NROTC board in Pensacola. Maybe they have some open slots for a school that the NROTC has pull in admissions. Who knows? I'll do anything right now, I just couldn't stand to see four "free" years vanish.

So you only actually applied to The Citadel? No other schools?

I only finished the application to The Citadel and opened the applications to UNC and NC State.

Well keep your fingers crossed that there is room for you at The Citadel. Maybe you can do a late application to NC State...but I doubt UNC will allow it. Hopefully Pensacola can help you out...

There is a lesson in all this for anyone that reads this thread.

If you are in doubt of your acceptance at any school get the applications in early.

Apply to all the schools on your list, again early.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Last year there were a few applicants that received scholarships but were told all the schools they listed were full. They were able to get a list of schools that still had open slots, some were able to still apply. Some universities have very late deadlines for addmissions. You may need to cast a much larger net to see what is available. If the scholarship is what you want, you may need to look at schools way outside your area. I realize the NROTC does not have as many colleges listed as the AROTC so I would start hunting soon.

I know of one school that has a later deadline....I have PM'd you.

Dude, you messed up. I'm sure P-17 can help you straighten it out.

FOR FUTURE APPLICANTS: The application for the NROTC 4 Year Scholarship specifically directs you to apply to ALL THE SCHOOLS ON YOUR LIST OF 5. What does it take, maybe an extra hour or two to complete an application to school #2, and the same for school #3, etc.? Eight add'l hours to have plan B, C, etc?

Don't be overly choosy, cocky, or lazy and only apply to one school!!!!!!! Most schools won't accept mid-March applications, so get it done by Jan 15 (or ealier, for example U of Florida has a hard deadline of Nov. 1. UCs in CA have a deadline of Nov. 30.)
