Man you gotta love their spirit! Never has so much been done with so little.

Would someone tell me, is it true some marines load own ammo rounds because they don't trust the issued stuff? or is that just an old wives tale?

When I was a squadron CO, we repaired and installed a main entrance hatch for one of my aircraft which we took from one that was on display at a now closed Naval Air Station. On one OCONUS deployment, I sent one of my maintenance chiefs to have a foreign repair facility manufacture us a hydraulic line for a landing gear door because there were none in the Navy supply system. He called me on the SAT phone and said "Skipper, they don't speak any English, they made us a perfect hydraulic line but how do I pay for it." We paid them US $20 cash...part worked great, never a problem...true story...

I don't care to hear a lecture though from the 4-star leadership on how DOD is broke because of sequestration. The American taxpayers send DOD freight trains full of their hard earned money. It's how DOD chooses to spend it. DOD is the largest child care provider in the world. 12 weeks of maternity leave is estimated to cost $500M per year. I recently heard they were short of JDAM guidance kits for the ISIS air campaign. $500M would buy a lot of them...

I am sure you might find suitable anecdotes but... seriously? I come down on the side of "old wives tale."

And in regards to USMC ingenuity... let me assure you that a "properly motivated" and experienced Marine NCO can scrounge just about anything! I have a seabag full of examples.
