It's not all navigation or the engine room at the Maritime Academies. At Mass Maritime, Cadets from the academy were involved in three high-profile local events in two days. http://www.maritime.edu/l2.cfm?page=95&news_id=1550

The Band and Honor Guard accompanied by First Company participated in the Plymouth, MA annual Thanksgiving Parade which featured a salute to the Merchant Marine. The honoree was Shane Murphy - MMA '01. Shane was on board the Maersk Alabama last spring when Capt. Richard Phillips, MMA '79, was held hostage by pirates.

The MMA Honor Guard also participated in the Miss America preliminary pageant, The 2010 Miss Taunton Scholarship Pageant. The Honor Guard had the delightful task of escorting the eleven contestants throughout the competition. (think it was tough to get volunteers for this detail?

The Regimental Drill Team traveled to Ithaca, NY and competed in the Cornell University Invitational - a combined military drill and military excellence tournament.

Meanwhile at SUNY Maritime Cadets were helping to celebrate Thanksgiving in an "only in New York" kind of event:
"On Monday evening, November 23rd, regimental and non-regimental students from the College’s Culture Clubs...served free Thanksgiving dinners to 150 elderly jazz musicians at The Jazz Foundation of America and the Jazz Musician’s Emergency Fund headquarters. Each year, the Foundation hosts a free “Thanksgiving Jam” for elderly musicians in need that includes a full Thanksgiving dinner, complete with all the trimmings, and a jazz concert performed in their honor by younger performers" ...

These schools definitely offer some different opportunities in addition to a first class education in a regimental environment. In a bit over a month the cadets at Mass Maritime will be embarking on the TS Kennedy for their Sea Term- probably about the time that many of the rest of us in the North East or Midwest will be shovelling our way thru yet another snow storm!
