My DD received a 3yr AROTC scholarship to Marquette or Xavier. She is having a hard time deciding between the two. Can anyone give us some insight on either of these schools? Thanks!!

I would recommend talking to both schools. Ask questions like where did their Ranger Challenge team place, how many cadets are in the battalion, how many days of pt, when is lab, how many slots do they get for summer training (different programs air assault, airborne, etc.), what do they do for FTX, any special opportunities offered by either school, how many of their seniors wanted AD and got it? Asking questions like this will allow you to rate the program based on your DD's goals, and what she finds most important. Another interesting thing to know would be how many females are in each battalion, might make the first couple "culture shock" weeks a little easier.

I assume you have visited both schools?

If not, let me say that there is a world of difference in regards to campus, facilities, weather, etc.

Perhaps her educational major might serve to separate the schools?

Well, since neither one of them has a football team, there are no bragging rights there. They are playing each other tomorrow night in a basketball game, it's always more fun to cheer for a winning team so maybe let the game decide her fate? Just kidding of course... :)

Does Marquette, being a Jesuit school, pay for room & board by chance? I know my daughter went to the University of Portland, another Jesuit school, and they paid room & board expenses. That was a huge burden taken off our shoulders which enabled us to do a lot of extras for her (and us) like flying home every break, study abroad, etc...

That is our problem....because it is only a 3 year scholarship. Marquette is giving her a $28k enhancement to be paid the first year for tuition. That leaves the remaining first year tuition and room and board for all 4 years. Xavier is offering her 1st year tuition and room and board for last 3 years. That only leave us 1st year room and board. The problem we are having...she has visited Marquette and fell in love with the school. She has not visited Xavier and we don't know if we can get her there before March 1st. She is considering Xavier because of the money savings....tough decisions!!

Well, I don't know how far you are from Xavier or how busy your schedule is but that's quite the incentive from Xavier. I'd find a way to get there. How could you go wrong, their nickname is the Musketeers!! How cool is that?

I went to UD (University of Dayton) and XU was/is our biggest rival. Totally uncool of me to say as a UD Grad, but I always thought XU was a really cool university. Plus the 'XU'... that is AWESOME. You simply cannot beat that as an identifier for your alma mater. I have never been to Marquette, but Milwaukee is really cold.

kaylar: I probably should have given more details in my first note. I had four children tour Marquette and one child eventually chose to study there. I had two children tour Xavier but neither chose to study there. So, I have personally been on 6+ tours (combined) of the two schools. Both are very good but there are very real differences as well.

I would never presume to tell your family how to choose a place to study.

I am not sure of the March 1 deadline - isn't the national decision day still May 1?

If you haven't done so, I suggest you speak with the respective Financial Aid offices. Sometimes, they will work with you to find alternatives.

Finally, it is very late in the game but if you are looking for regional Catholic schools you could consider Dayton and Saint Louis. They are essentially in the same grouping.

I agree with considering Saint Louis University. The cadre there is great and SLU gives room and board to scholarship recipients.

I assume OP is referring to the deadline to accept the AROTC scholarship. Also, it's a bit late to be adding new schools to the list in February. Most have application deadlines, although I didn't check these two schools specifically.

Kaylar - for what it's worth, my DS has travelled to Xavier twice in the last three years to compete in the Best Ranger competition they hold yearly. He has always spoken highly of the school and their AROTC unit.

Both excellent choices, both are Jesuit Universities, both campuses are in Urban settings, although the nod probably goes to Xavier for the money that they have pumped into student housing as of late. Both have fine AROTC Battalions, it really boils down to a personal choice between Milwaukee or Cincinnati. If you had a little more time in the process you could have taken a look at one of the better kept AROTC Battalion secrets .... The Wolfpack Battalion of John Carroll University in the Cleveland suburb of University Heights, OH. A Jesuit University as well, just smaller in size than Marquette and Xavier. I believe the Wolfpack is one of the top rated private college AROTC programs in the Midwest.
