Ok everyone i just got like 5 packets in the mail and im getting overwhelmed. First off, as far as i knew i had to get a new laptop but now it seems that i just need one that meets requirements? And if i check that I am interested in a Deck major i dont thats not absolute until ocober first right? i can still go engineering if i wanted too? I also thought that the academy issued shoes and "gym clothes" when you showed up for indoc but now i have to get my own shoes (not a big deal just curious)? Also, I can buy a pre-made package of everything on my check list in the NEX store? and would it be mailed or would i pick it up when i report? I also understand that i should bring some extra money when i report in other than what i need for a cab to get there? should it be a credit card or can i set up an account with the bank their over the internet before flying across the country and haveing more to worry about? Sorry for all the questions I would really appreciate any precise answers to any of these questions or maybe even info on who to talk to that knows for sure.

Let me know if your questions have been answered. You can pm me and I will help you as much as I can:smile:

My understanding is that you just need to bring your own laptop which meets the USMMA requirements.

And if i check that I am interested in a Deck major i dont thats not absolute until ocober first right? i can still go engineering if i wanted too?

Yes and Yes. Without a doubt you can change majors. None of your first trimester classes are major specific.

Yes, bring your own shoes, and make sure they are the blue Asics on the list. Don't draw attention on yourself by being different. On the same note, when they say plain white crew length socks, don't be the guy that shoes up with the Nike Dri Fit socks.

Also, I can buy a pre-made package of everything on my check list in the NEX store? and would it be mailed or would i pick it up when i report?

You almost have to buy the pre-made package, there is absolutely no way to get some of the things they require without buying from the NEX. Just buy from the NEX, it will make your life 98765678987656789 times easier. Everyone will pick it up together as part of the first day of indoc. If you watch the 2015 indoc video (http://youtu.be/_OmhV7c-rB4) around the 1:53 mark you see people running around the grey Rubbermaid tubs, that is there stuff from the NEX.

I also understand that i should bring some extra money when i report in other than what i need for a cab to get there? should it be a credit card or can i set up an account with the bank their over the internet before flying across the country and haveing more to worry about?

The bank on campus is Navy Federal. Unless you are eligible to join you can't set up an account early. I would bring a little bit of extra cash, credit, or debit doesn't really matter. You'll want a good meal before you report. You'll also be allowed to visit the Navy Exchange during indoc and get extra things you might need. The NEX takes credit card, there is an ATM outside, and of course cash.

Sorry for the type-o's I waited too long and can't edit them.... sorry.

Thanks

Thankyou GA for the PM and Beyond you helped a lot too. Not as confused any more but the laptop is still a little "iffy" I believe my laptop more than meets the requirments its an i7, 720 GB hard drive , 15 inch screen, windows 7 operating system with radeon graphics with 6 GB of ram and 2 ghz processor. you said there is a link on the main website i can check these or is it on the NEX website because I dont think i can get into NEX. Thanks again!

It wont be on the NEX website because that site is for the entire national Naval Exchange System, which you have to be active duty military or a dependent of someone who is to access the website.

The Logging In 2016 booklet states...

"Effective the Class of 2016, Candidates reporting to Indoctrination must arrive with the personal computer laptop of their choice that meets or exceeds the following hardware and software requirements".

BUT, it goes on to say...

"The Firmware requirement is established by the Department of Transportation and the Department of Homeland Security. At the time this document was written, a limited number of personal computer manufacturers satisfy this requirement. Only recent Dell Latitude E-Series laptops comply. Laptops that do not feature NIST 800-147."

So really you have no choice.

ugh... ok well i will just plan on getting a new laptop then. Do i purchase the insurance for it with Dell or does the academy have the insurance for it?

YES -- Insurance !!!!!!!!!!

Lost, Stolen despite Honor Code,Broken, Water Damage, Dropped, Frisbee Thrown During Winter Gray, Drop Kicked during Finals....and many other damages have been reported....

Not sure what the insurance from Dell covers but most if not all of the above are covered by USAA Renter's insurance which will be the best deal you can buy if nothing has changed over the past four years.

The best thing you can get is the on campus insurance if they will offer it to you. No matter what happens (drop your laptop and break the screen), you take it to Samuels hall, drop it off, they'll have it back to you next day or give you a loaner. It is one thing DoIT does right.

Shopping for logging in items

This has nothing to do with the computer, but it seems like we went to practically every store looking for the items in the logging in book last year. We looked for the correct blue shorts everywhere and finally found them at Walmart and all white socks at Old Navy. Just some suggestions. It may save you some time!

To Jasperdog. It has been too long, but I don't recall having to come to KP for indoc in our day with anything but the clothes on our back. Of course this was back in the day before PCs and laptops. . .

I just don't recall having a list of shorts, shoes, socks, etc. Is my memory fading, or did we get issued all that stuff on that crazy scary hot and humid first day?

On a side note, the smell of sweat and fresh khakis gives me flashbacks. Good thing it isn't a common occurrence.

wait wuuuutttt?

Hold on a second ther... we have to get blue shorts? I thought it was only running shoes and some white shirts and stuff, i haven't seen anything about blue shorts. But someone did say blue asics for the shoes, is that what everyone gets?

You really do want to read the logging in book. They are very specific on what you will need, and getting ready for indoc! Good Luck. It looks like a lot to do, but keep the faith it will all come together. Just giving you some advice in case you will need the blue shorts. I am sure you will need socks without any logos etc on them. Have a good day and enjoy your time before you report in.

yeah i did download and print the logging in book. I'm getting bits and pieces here and there and finding out that the academy hasn't even sent me some information so just making sure I have it all. Thanks everybody, this forum rocks.

Call the Nex at the academy they will let you order from them and it will meet all requirements and you have somewhere to take it back if need be.
