Oh, the vanity! I am embarrassed, but compelled to ask: when do mids get a portrait photograph taken? Annually? When (about what month) is the first one?

Truth be told, part of this is driven by my DS' great grandmother who is 91 and has her bouts of medical problems, and I know would LOVE a framed portrait to put in her Naval Academy Museum (a/k/a, her house).

They were taking portraits during my CVW last year, which was the last weekend in October. Pretty snazzy stuff. Not sure when the photos were ready.

Formal portraits are taken at some time after the school year starts. There is also a company, Thornton Studios, that takes candid shots throughout plebe summer and also schedules formal portraits throughout the fall. It costs $40-$50 to have access to the website where the pictures are posted, but you get that amount credited toward any purchase you make. Their products are expensive, but they tend to have 20-40% sales if you are willing to wait until the end of the calendar year and the end of plebe year. I have seen both positive and negative reviews of Thornton - we had a fairly positive experience and enjoyed the pictures they took of our son. I can't comment on the DVDs since we didn't buy any of them. During plebe summer, USNA is really good about posting hundreds of candid photos on their facebook site, and there are two ladies who are known for posting lots of pictures on dropshots as well.

They do Class Photo every year for the Yearbook. When I don't know. Thornton will do the photo if your Plebe schedules it. Don't count on them to do it but if you want one press the issue. We never got one from ours as she couldn't be bothered.

If you're in the area why not take your plebe to a photographer in the area and have his/her pic taken in their whites. You probably would have a set of prints to take home from PPW and show the family how much your plebe has changed in six short weeks - and a great looking uniform! Just an idea... but it will relieve the urgency with great grandmother's fragile health.

When we got back to the Yard early on Sunday of PPW (good advice generally to avoid the rush) we were out at the sea wall and I snapped a few portraits of our DD in her Whites. Great back drop, smiling as plebe summer is over, relaxed from the weekend...turned out great.

Our 2015 Plebe had his portrait taken with his company for the yearbook. As I understood, this occured by company order - he was one of the last. It was great quality for the cost compared to the local competitor. The advantage to waiting for this - your plebe will have their full complement of uniforms. The local company, Th******, has beautiful products, high quality, etc.. but is pricey. Overall - it was good enough for mom and melted the hearts of anyone who knows our Mid. You'll receive a letter with login and key to look at proof and place your order.
