I just saw on Twitter that another Mid has left us. My prayers and thoughts are with the Loewen family on the passing of their son Hans. God Bless him and his family.

    I saw that as well.

Prayers for the family of Hans Loewen, and all who are affected by the recent losses at USNA.

Utterly heartbroken for the Allen, McKamey, and Loewen families. Thoughts and prayers for their families as well as the USNA family, and community.

For those not on FB this is from the USNA fb page:

It is with great sadness we report that Midshipman Third Class (sophomore) Hans Loewen, 20, of Hampstead, N.C., passed away this morning while in a coma at University of Maryland Medical Center Shock Trauma in Baltimore. The death comes six days after he sustained injuries in a skateboarding accident while on liberty away from the academy Saturday, March 22.

Loewen was camping at Assateague State Park with other midshipmen when he suffered his injuries. After initial treatment on the scene by local emergency medical personnel, he was transported to the shock trauma unit in Baltimore. Since then, his family has been at his bedside and supported by his friends, family, midshipmen and Naval Academy leadership.

“My wife, Barbara and I join the Brigade, staff and faculty in mourning the loss of Midshipman Hans Loewen,” said Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Michael Miller. “Hans was a vibrant Midshipman who lived his life to the fullest, and that spirit will be forever imprinted on his classmates and the Naval Academy. As we celebrate Hans’ courage and commitment, we also come together in support for his family and friends, and all who were touched by his presence. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the Loewen’s, and our extended USNA family, during this very difficult time.”

Loewen was an oceanography major in 7th Company at the Academy, and his extra-curricular activities included the Adventure Racing Team, the American Nuclear Society and the Rock Climbing Club.

Funeral arrangements are pending, and more information will be provided as it becomes available. For more information from the Loewen family about Hans, please visit http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/hansloewen.

The Naval Academy will continue to support Loewen’s family, friends, and loved ones during this time of grief.

Grief counseling services and support are available to midshipmen, faculty and staff through chains of command, our chaplains, and the Midshipmen Development Center.
