My son received an Appointment to USMMA.

    Questions:

    1. Do they have Induction Day ceremony, "graduation," etc. like USNA?
    2. Are 1st year Midshipmen allowed off base often?
    3. How often can parents visit?
    4. When/how long do they get breaks?
    5. When do 1st year Mids report?

I know all these answers for USNA, but not USMMA

-Very Proud, but worried mama from Missouri

If parents are only able to come once during the summer, is it more important for us to be there for report date or acceptance day? Thanks...

I agree with KP Eng, if you can ONLY make one trip I would select Acceptance Day. It is actually an entire weekend of activities starting Friday morning, with the Acceptance Day Ceremony on Saturday and their first overnight liberty ending Sunday afternoon.

Since I lived on the West Coast, my folks never came out, but yeah, I agree with the two posts above. That first day, I don't know what parents can provide other than a hug and a hearty pat on the back. . . there were quite a few like me, from a good ways away that showed up in our leisure suits and with our suitcases. . . plenty angry about paying full cost for a hotel room at the Bayberry Inn only to have to share it with three others. . . . . welcome to Long Island. . . yet, as usual, I digress. . .

Acceptance day, hands down. Making it even only to Acceptance Day is a much greater accomplishment than simply getting in.

Coming from the west coast, my parents only dropped me at the airport but I wasn't alone. There were five of us going to KP on the same flight. In hindsight, it allowed me to focus only on what I needed to do to survive the day.

Also, ask yourself, would you rather just drop your DS/DD off, say goodbye and get a tour; or actually spend some time with them and have them give you a tour.

Acceptance Day. DS or DD will be sworn into the Regiment and US Navy Reserve. Several ceremonies, colors and band.

This schedule is probably accurate. We reported 30 June 15. Indoc ended about the same time.

Is there a summer break? I saw the ones for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring on the academic calendar for last year, but that's it.

No real summer break. All told, DS has 5 days his first summer and a total of 7 home this second summer (he is B split). This is not a regular college with a regular college schedule.

Thanks. Wasn't sure how it worked out with trimesters, sea year, etc. My father went to USNA and he told me they had almost a month of summer leave

KP was on the quarter system when I attended. The only "summer break" I really had was between second and first class year and was about 6 weeks or so. All of the other summers were eaten up with Sea Year. Not a problem, really. Kind of a reflection of how my life went after school. Back then, we didn't get Spring Break, either.

Half of them are spent at sea enjoying the deep blue ocean :)

There are breaks for the federal holidays with slightly longer breaks at thanksgiving and Christmas. Many go home, some spend the time at a friends house, etc
