If you are invited to a military social function where the dress is proscribed (SDB, Dinner Dress, etc...) and you are a policeman, or firefighter, would you wear your equivalent, or would that be acceptible and even if it is would it be a little too weird?

    I'd wear a suit.

I don't think a military person showing up in uniform to a Police social would be appropriate either.

I'd agree and say wear a suit. I don't know about it from a military side, so I can't necessarily say with any certainty that you should/n't wear a uniform, but I know that in law enforcement military members can and (very often) do wear their uniforms to LE functions.
