Just talked to the Sergeant at VMI. He just got today (3/23) the Form 61 from MCRC and now knows who got the scholarships for his school! You may be able to call each of your schools and ask.

Well, we finally found out by calling the RS XO. TWE for DS. Ouch. I am wondering what it takes. DS had a 1400 SAT, over 4.0 weighted GPA, and was an Eagle Scout and a 241 PFT.

    OUcH!

We heard yesterday, and I think not getting it bothered me more than my son. Now we plan for basic and how college will work with the reserves. At least OU was offering him enough in aid to come there without loans, so we hope we can roll that to spring of 2012. I wish someone would tell us exactly what it did take to get the scholarship.

Sorry to hear that.... Did you find out through the NROTC application status portal? DS still says the same thing it has said for MONTHS! No decision has been reached.....

It is a shame that the Recruiting Station could not have called your DS first.

Not a surprise, I was beginning to wonder if my son's recruiter even knew what planet he was on. Almost everything told to us was false....

My son had a 3.8 gpa in a 4.0 scale, Cadet Lt. Col. in CAP, excellent PT scores, and 5 varsity letters. He did not get the MO NROTC scholarship. We were told by an elected official that the DOD is being strong-armed by the administration to put minorities at the top of the list in order to diversify the officer corps.....

Unfortunatly, my son is now so dissapointed in the government and the Marine Corps that he is reconsidering his life long dream of being a Marine Corps Officer.

    GoinBroke,

I am sorry to hear your news and understand the emotions.

While you want to understand the reason, the criteria, circumstances, and luck that determine the selection process are probably way beyond rational explaination.

After some time goes by where you both will go through all the steps of the grief process, your son should look at his options. There are alternate ways to become a Marine Officer and there are other ways to serve your country. He should also make sure to participate in our country's democratic process so his voice is heard.

For all of you who find yourself in this situation, I want to thank you for making the effort to join our country's military and serve your country. You are a select group of people who have the capacity to make in a difference in this world and I wish you every success.

Thank you for that wonderful message, USMCGrunt. I have said this many times, but there is so much that goes into these decisions that have little to do with credentials of a candidate. The only way to mitigate these risks is to cast your net as broadly as possible. Fate will guide you to the candidate's "spot in life".

The Class of 2016 needs to know that they can have perfect scores but other factors come into play that neutralize these things. Overall, I think it is a good system and the objectives of NROTC are noble. (this is just IMHO, and I know others will disagree with me).

I also totally agree that folks should nevertheless keep driving on toward their ultimate goal. If folks really want to be a Marine Corps officer, pursue that path relentlessly because things have a way of working out in the end. I wouldn't blame the government in this instance, though.

As for my DS, his status for NROTC (non-MO) hasn't changed since forever. He is expecting the TWE any day now, but has other options because he tossed out a wide net at the start of this process.

Patentesq: I wish your son the best of luck, certainly more luck than my DS got in this process. My DS will be fine -- we claim no entitlement to either the USNA appointment that he didn't get or the MO ROTC scholarship he didn't get. I am going to say that this whole selection process, with the suggestions of unstated selection criteria, has left a real sour taste in my mouth. I am hardly naive, but I am saddened and disappointed.

One would have thought so. If only as to give some sort of recognition to how hard these great kids have worked. One would have also hoped that there would a greater level of competence with regard to the website. My DS's message *still* hasn't changed. I mean, whatever is the point of having a web site if it isn't maintained or used? The selection criteria are now a complete mystery to me, but is a little competence and courtesy too much to ask?

USMCGrunt: I appreciate your post. IMHO, a selection process that is "way beyond rational explanation" is simply another way of saying that it has become arbitrary. In the long run, an arbitrary selection process is not in the best interests of the military or of the United States. Once the word gets out, fewer of the best will be applying because they don't have put up with an arbitrary system. Applicants and existing military personnel will vote with their feet and they will never tell you why. Good luck to you.

I'm just completely lost on how this process works, and have no idea on the status of this scholarship, it seems that almost everyone else is getting a notification of some sort, but I still haven't got any word whatsoever. So I mean at this point I'm assuming they "forgot" about me
