MO NROTC tiered majors

I am about 60% done with my marine option NROTC application. I'm all right at math and science (610 math on SAT) but I would prefer not to do a technical major.

I saw stuff on this site and others that indicated the marines don't care if you do a technical major or not. However, when the application online asked me to indicate my major, it showed them tiered like the Navy NROTC does.

My question is: do the marines take your major under consideration when deciding scholarships or not?

My son was awarded the MO NROTC Scholarship in April. When he filled out his application, it asked for his intended major, but did not show them as tiered - just a long list of options. He asked his Recruiter if it made a difference as to what major he chose, and the recruiter told him to pick the major he really wanted to pursue. He chose Military Science and has since changed it to History. Both of those majors would be considered a Tier 3.

We were really concerned as to his chances of receiving the scholarship since he did not pick a Tier 1 or Tier 2 - especially after reading these threads. I'm under the impression, that at the time he filled out his Marine Option application, it was not an issue. That may have changed since you stated the application now shows the majors as being tiered.

My advice would be to chose a major that you would be happy with and interested in. It's not worth a scholarship to commit to a major that you would be miserable with. Also, keep in mind that the boards look at the WHOLE applicant. Interview, Essay, PFT, Athletics, Extra Curricular Activities, letters of recommendation. It seems like this year they also gave great consideration to the universities chosen by the applicant. My son received his scholarship to his 1st choice school, which also was the flagship in-state university.

Good luck to you! This is a wild ride for sure!

Tiers are only for Navy Option. Major has no bearing on the MO scholarship.

Then why when I fill out the online application does it show the major, then hyphonated next to it, what tier it is in? It shows on the online app that I've selected the MO.
