Is it advised to put the candidate's name on the things they bring? Seems like there is going to be about 1800 white towels floating around. If so, how should they mark the items?

Does the incoming class of 2013 need fans? If so how small or big? Window type or floor type? Oscillating, etc? What works best? Seems like when they get to move into the newer rooms there will be AC, but I'm sure for now a fan is a personal treasure. I see all different kinds of fans candidates are carrying in the 2012 day one photos on the parent website.

Cell Phones???? What do we do - cancel the contract and get the candidate a phone card as recommended in Logging In. Will they get there cell phones back ever? We might just keep the cell phone open, because if we cancel now, we will get a penalty. Any input appreciated on the cell phone topic.

Thanks.

Do NOT put your name on ANYTHING until you get there. They will be instructed as to where, when, and how to mark things after they arrive.
If they are in 2nd company or band company they will need a small portable fan as these barracks are not air conditioned. The problem is you won't know which company they are assigned to until after they arrive. If they don't play an instrument you can pretty much rule out band but, 2nd is a possibility. With that in mind a small portable box fan would probably be a good idea.

As for cell phones, they are not allowed during Indoc but they will get limited usage after Indoc ends. Cell phones are taken away on arrival and returned when they are allowed to have them. If you can, I would recommend staying with what you have. None of the companies seem to get very good service there, so there does not seem to be an advantage to switching. In the past those all important first phone calls during Indoc were done using the pay phones at the Academy, but, I think last year they started giving the candidates their cell phones for this purpose

One more thing. Once you are assigned to a company you typically remain there for all four years. So you don't get to move into newer rooms. If you get put in 2nd company or band you will be without a/c until that barracks is renovated.

Get the best fan that can be carried. Those big box fans are the best. Stay with your cell phone provider. The candidates will be able to make calls on Sundays shortly after Indoc. Once they begin getting liberty, typically after acceptance day, they will have their phones on weekends. Phones are usually held by the company training officer during the week. Verizon has the best service at the academy, but it's not worth switching. If you decide to mark anything, limit it to the items that vary from candidate to candidate. Such as your bag, cell phone, or fan (mark your fan). The other items will be stenciled during Indoc.

Yes, last year the Indoc phone calls were done with the candidate's cell phone. Most of the pay phones have been removed. So definitely bring the cell phone. It will be held by the company during the week.

Send the cheap towels to Indoc. They get stuffed in odd places, carried to the waterfront and generally misplaced. Our daughter had only one left by the end of Indoc. Then we sent her the nice towels.

We sent her with a decent, medium-sized box fan. She ended up in Band Co. and definitely needed it! We were surprised to discover at Parents Weekend that they had extra fans that some of the upperclassmen had let them use. Band Co. will apparently be the last to get renovated barracks.

Yeah, but that means band company will get the "bragging rights" that go with being the last class to go 4 years without a/c. They will also be able to say that the snow was deeper and it was an uphill walk to class....both ways!:shake:

Should they bring any civilian clothes at all other than the ones on their backs, or is it better to wait until parents weekend? Does everyone need to bring a fan? If they end up in a room with air conditioning do they still need a big box fan?

No civvies! They won't get a chance to wear them. Even after parents weekend, plebes always travel in uniform. If you're going to take them far enough away (I forget the actual distance) on parents weekend, they can change into civvies while away.

From the Plebe Parent tips kpmom2011 referred to:

Fans are a must during Indoc – you should bring it w/ you or your Candidate can purchase one from the Navy Exchange. Candidates will be allowed to frequent the Navy Exchange during Indoc but at this writing it is not certain when during Indoc this will occur. If you bring one, leave it in the box and make a sturdy handle – they will have to run w/ it across campus. Put an extension cord in the box. Three of the five companies of Candidates will be housed in the newly rebuilt Jones, Barry & Palmer Halls, which are air conditioned. (The assignments are totally random and not made until the Candidates are actually on board.) Window fans will not be needed or allowed in Jones, Barry or Palmer Halls, but smaller desk top or floor models are allowed and recommended.

Those tips are a must read for all candidates! Thank you kpmom2011!

I read that and it is kind of confusing because it says they need to bring one, then it says they aren't allowed in 3 of the halls. So either they bring one and have a 2/5 chance of being able to use it, or they don't bring one and if they need it try to get to the NEX and get one.

What it means is that window fans can't be used in the three renovated halls. That's those double fans that have to be in the window. If it sits on the desk top it is OK and even recommended. So send a decent fan that will sit on the desk.

Don't do what I did to my DS. I figured the odds of him getting into the 1 non renovated company was slim, since I knew he would not be in Band. Anyway, bought him a cheesy little fan and he died during indoc. Thanks goodness an upperclassman had pity on him after indoc and gave him his nice boxed fan :) Lesson learned, send a good fan!
