Just wondering if any cadet has gone to the Winter Session of Mountain Warfare School, and what the experience was like. Thanks

A guy in my class went this past summer. Said it was fun, but very stressful and intense. He came back knowing a lot about knots and fieldcraft. If you have specific questions, I can get you answers.

I know NROTC MO MIDNs go in the summer. I'm wondering why you're asking. Do you perhaps have a son planning on attending the winter session? Perhaps over Christmas Break?

I know I always enjoyed my winter skiing in Tahoe just north of there, back in the days when I could still ski. I don't think I'd personally want to be doing the Mountain Warfare training that time of year though. At least not my first time.

The winter course doesn't just happen during winter months. They have a summer course in Vermont and a winter course in Alaska. You can go to the Alaska course during the summer months too.

Had a buddy do the summer course (enjoyed it and learned a lot about knots apparently), our PMS gave him permission to wear his ram's head around even though only NE ARNG units are authorized to wear it :thumb:

The course that is in Alaska is the Northern Warfare School. The Mountain Warfare School is done in Vermont for the Winter Course and I believe Ft. Benning for the Summer Course.

3 cadets, one from the 8th, 3rd, and 4th Brigade have been given slots at the Winter Mnt. Warfare Course at the Vermont Ethan Allen Firing Range. The challenge now is getting the colleges to work with the cadets due to the fact they will be missing classes while at the school, the school is 14 days at starting the beginning of Feb. The battalion has already started talking with the school.

I loved reading the packing list, Ice Picks, Ice Crampons, Skies, and Snow Shoes.

We'll just have to see if they can work everything out. Thanks in advance if any one has any info on the Winter Course.

Yeah I wonder how many cadets have actually done the winter portion seeing as it would usually fall during school. I know we have gotten a few Fall and spring slots for various schools that we can't use because of this. Some teachers might be more flexible but for a lot of departments 14 days would definitely be a no-go as it is an elective course for ROTC.

Your right, it will be interesting to see if they will be able to work it out. As it stands right now they have said if the college is not onboard then the school will be a no go. He'll just have to see how it works out.

I had no idea about it til the guy in my class went and came back with the ram's head.

The course run in Alaska does the same things that they do in Vermont and they get a certificate for completing BMC as well as the rams head. I only know that because a friend in my battalion has been to that course as well.

Contracted Marine Option MIDN usually do Mountain Warfare (for two weeks) in California as their second (rising junior) cruise. I don't think this option is available for Navy Option Midn as they usually spend their time at sea level
