Yeah, my BGO emailed me and asked to provide dates for when we could meet. Kinda sounds a little weird but is this common?

Not too weird, they have jobs too. Probably trying to take advantage of being able to visit more than one candidate in an area if possible, would be my guess...

That or your BGO is stalking you... :yllol: Just kidding!

Personally I'm glad yours contacted you, ours was almost impossible to get ahold of!

Wait, I didn't even get that! :shake:

If he were a prospective for 2012, wouldn't he already be there? Or is it prospective for going in in 2012? Now I am completely confused! :yllol:

Previously, he had posted that he was hoping to be a plebe in 2012, so I would assume he hasn't even applied yet.

yeah i had the same thought but his profile said he was sophmore so i figure he meant for plebe year

Look...what I meant by weird is not that in the stalker-kind of way but that he's contacting me (normally I thought it would be the other way around) and so early (way before I can even think of applying), and that he wants to meet when my previous perception of the BGO was one you ask questions to through email/phone and who maybe conducts the interview after you apply.

First of all, different BGOs take different approaches to setting up interviews. Some want to get as many done as early as possible for any number of reasons (summers are more convenient to schedule, get them off the "to do" list, be sure that the interview doesn't hold up the package, etc.). Others wait until candidates have shown a certain level of interest in applying -- usually have 1/3 to 1/2 of their packet complete. It really is personal preference.

In terms of "way before I can even think of applying," if you've completed a pre-candidate questionnaire and/or attended NASS, USNA assumes you're applying and thus provides your info to a BGO. If you decide not to continue with your application, let your BGO and USNA know.

If you think it's too early for your BGO interview, politely tell your BGO that you'd like to have it later in the year -- for whatever reason you want to wait (i.e., you haven't decided whether you plan to apply this year). That said, I'm not sure why you want to put it off unless you've decided not to complete your application.

I think 2012Cadet's concern is that he is only a high school sophomore. If you look at the profile, 2012Cadet is a prospective for Class of 2016. The question is whether it's normal for a BGO to want to meet so long before the prospective can even apply.

I don't know how "normal" it is. But I do know a young man who is applying to USNA for class of 2014 who met with his BGO a couple of years ago. So it does happen. Look at it as a chance to have questions answered and get advice on classes and activities that can strengthen your application.

With all the negative comments about the BGO's who don't reply within 12-24 hrs, I think it is funny that now we have to worry about 'weird' BGO's who call Candidates too early.
Personally I would REALLY like getting a few minutes with Candidates that early in the process. There is SO MUCH bad info out there.
Things they MUST do, things they should NEVER do ... and the advice has one common, persistant feature...all wrong! Worse, it comes from well meaning and usually reliable teachers and parents and even veterans whose information was correct 10-20 years ago (and is just not optimized for today's application).
Like ALL the Liaison Officers for ALL the Academies, we're just trying to help. If you spend time seeking ulterior motives and secret handshakes, well, it is just time wasted.
So congrats to 2012Cadet for having access to a local expert with current information. Most people have to log on to this website and wait for a range of responses where as YOU can just pick up the phone. Pretty good deal...
