Definitely seen worse. Yours isn't that bad. Need to get the SAT scores into the mid 600's e.g. 650. Try to get gpa up a couple if you can. Continue to take AP/IB/Honors type classes. If you can do varsity sports and can letter in it, that's great. Try more leadership. Asst coach and NHS VP for events is good, but try for officer positions in clubs, boy's state, etc... Definitely doable. Best of luck to you. Later.... Mike....

Well it's too late to raise up my gpa bit I am increasing my extracurric and sports. I will be doing varsity wrestling and will be trying to get a letterman award for that. Also I will be taking 3 more so classes and 2 ap equivalent courses at my junior college. Aiming for 4.0 :)

I will also be joining marine jrotc (only jrotc going to be offered next year), restarting the rootics club and creating recycling club with friends at school.

My gpa is so low because I did very bad my freshman year (3.5 and 3.0 each semester respectively). I gradually inreaaed my gpa and my course rigor each year.

Anyways thanks christcorp for the comment.

I would re-take the SAT and try the ACT.

You always want to be at or above the median. Math should be @660, and CR should be around 640.

The gpa will be reweidghted by the AFA, so you might see it higher on your page.

Robotics club? You wouldn't by chance mean through FIRST, would you?

I don't know if one year of JROTC is going to help that much. I would think the academies would look more favorably on a year of a tough college-prep course. IMHO, JROTC looks good when you have several years of it and can rise to leadership positions.

One thing you should realize is that where you come from also will play into the situation. If you are coming from a very competitive area like VA, MD or CO, their stats may be much higher than somebody froma less competitve state. It is not only your WCS, but everybody else on the slate. You can win it with yours, but somebody else who has higher stats from a more competitive area might not.

jarvin, if you're a senior in high school, you've got time to help your grades. I know it's not going to go up to a 3.9, but if you have the fall semester grades that still count.

And like Pima said, everything about you is compared against those in your state also applying. I've seen people with better stats NOT get an appointment. I've also seen some with stats similar to yours get an appointment. FWIW; I know first hand a few years ago of an individual with a 4.0gpa and kick butt ACT who didn't get an appointment. But one thing is for sure; if you don't apply, then you have a 0% chance of getting an appointment. Best of luck. Mike....

Yeah its through FIRST, we are going to try to compete again this year. The club disintegrated because we didn't have money to fund the projects.

Anyways my school is only offering JROTC this coming year. I've tried to join AFJROTC since my junior year, but it seems like the detachment in my area only offers it to the people attending that high school.

Yes, but I am not sure if the MOCS talk, in other words, NY, VA, MD, TX and CO traditionally will only give 1 nom from the 3 sources. NY MOCs even state that if you got a nom from another MOC we want you to state it. They have so many applicants that they want to spread the wealth, not sure about FLA. In NC they do not talk. I believe it is also true for NJ, DE, ME and many other states.

All of the competitive states might give you multiple noms. One for USNA, one for AFA, one for CGA, but it is unlikely you will get 3 noms for one SA from a state that is competitive. Do not take it personally if you only get 1 nom, since you only need to have 1 nom. 4 will not guarantee you an apptmt.

Well I would say get the grades up. Get one high school sport, and raise the SAT. But you have time to do all that dont you?

    CA is competitive for Noms

CA is very competitive for all the SAs... It is not uncommon for a Congressman to have a hundred applicants and the Senators to have a thousand or more. The MOCs coordinate efforts to spread the noms around and it is rare, though not unheard of, for an applicant receive duplicate noms.

note: some districts are not as competitive as others - it depends on what district you are from - some areas have far fewer candidates than others but the bottom line is that many districts have a lot of applicants & they absolutely coordinate nominations. It is rare to get a duplicate nom, though some Reps do give noms to more than one SA the Senators do not. Similarly, the Senators ask the candidate to rank their SAs preference and the Senators coordinate with each other and all districts to ensure that they do not give a nom to someone who is already getting a nom from another source.

Drew since his honors are only weighted .25, his gpa will probably increase since most schools weight at .5 for honors and he has shown an uptick. His M SAT is the achilles heel, also true for M ACT. The AFA is known as the little engineering school in the rockies...Math means alot.

Also his state means alot...if he is from AK, he stands better than from CO. States like CO, MD/VA and NY are very competitive since they have military bases, but also an SA in the region

HIS BIG PLUS...SLS, in other words the AFA has already seen something in him! SLS is not a summer camp that the folks pay for, you have to compete for it, they even give the CFA there!

Thanks for the information guys. All this is allowing me to undestand the competition a little better, giving me a bit more motivation.

Anyways yes I understand my math sat is low, and so are the rest of my SAT scores. I am currently in the process of improving that hoping to get above 650 on each section, espescially math. The only thing I am worried about is my gpa. My unweighted is way below average, and nothing I can do much to improve my overall gpa other than continue to take challenging classes, and do well my 1st semester senior year.

btw my cfa when i took it at the academy:
bball: 79 ft (working on the form)
pull-ups: 15 (again trying to max, by this time my biceps are dead! And it's hard to use my lats to pull my self above the bar)
situps: 85 (For some reason I cannot max this out!! It's just so hard for me. My muscle endurance is really low, but I'm trying) :thumb:
    push-ups: 70 (trying to max)
shuttle: 9.1 (training calves to improve my quickness)
mile: 7:49 (yeah i know pretty bad, my cardiovascular endurance is not too strong)

I might be incorrect, but see if you can re-take the CFA since you did it at SLS. Your run is high, you want it close to 7, and right now it is closer to 8...your regional should be able to answer if you can.

Your sit ups are very close to max, only off by 4, don't sweat it. your pull-ups are off by 3, don't sweat that either. Pay more attention to the running.

    Good luck

Yes I still have to retake the test. It doesn't count up there and I'm hoping I can improve my endurance here in the lower altitude environment in CA.

Don't rush it since you do not have a presidential you will not meet until you have a nom, once you submit it, its over. The CFA may only be 20%, but maxing may be your make or break. Get that run under 7, shuttle under 9 and you are close to max, you are very close to the max for pull ups, push ups and sit ups work on them, but concentrate on the running plus the bbal...max is 100 ft.

You can wait until the end of Feb to submit the CFA...better to have the best score and max to your personal limits than submit and wonder could I have done one more pull up?
