My Terminal Leave Adventure...

If you're really into the Lincoln assassination and such...head to Key West, take the ferry over to Fort Jefferson..."home" to Dr Sam Mudd...

It's an amazing place!

Wasn't sure if that was your patrol area...

My wife and I were there many years ago...snorkeling about 400yds out...and saw something about half buried in the sand...about 20 feet down.

Long story short...it was a HUGE anchor (okay, huge to this pilot anyway) and about 60 feet of chain with BIG links! And not new. :wow:

We "marked" the spot by taking a "fix" from the bird sanctuary island and the fort...and swam back in. Went to speak with the rangers...they didn't know of it so...out they went.

Later we received a nice letter from the Nat'l Parks Service that said they believed it was an anchor from the "Great White Fleet" that had weathered a severe storm in that area...several large warships had "dragged anchors" and lost them.

I love that area; the entire "reef" area is just amazing... :thumb:

Every now and then National Park Service has Cuban's land way out there. We've develpoed a good relationship with the NPS official at the fort.

LITS: I'll chime in with thanks for your service.

Others have mentioned I-81, the Blue Ridge and Shenandoah National Park, but no one has mentioned the Appalachian Trail. There are more miles of the Trail in Virginia than in any other state. You can access it at a number of places along I-81 (the trail runs across the top of an I-81 tunnel), or every few miles along a long stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway just south of Shenandoah.

(Or, you can have someone drop you off, pack and all, near Fredericksburg, MD at the pedestrian bridge that crosses I-70, climb the fence...... No, wait, that would be illegal!)

Right near VMI right?

And VMI has great architecture (on the National Historic Register), a really neat Institute museum, as well as the George Marshall museum - and right next door at Washington & Lee is the Lee Chapel and Museum.

Good luck, and enjoy your travels!

Thanks everyone, this has been very very helpful! I'm excited for the trip. :thumb:

FYI - Fredericksburg is in VA.

Frederick is in MD. :thumb:
