NASS Acceptance

DS got his acceptance letter to Session 3 of NASS today - we're in Virginia, 1st district. Unfortunately, he was selected for Boys State and had to commit about a month ago. He did get the week he asked for and can't change to another week because he has finals at Governor's School during Session 1 and finals at his high school the week of Session 2. Looks like there will be a spot opening up for someone else. He's considering asking about a CVW instead but we're not sure how to do that.

Anytime we had questions we would call the admissions office and ask to speak with our admissions counselor. I would call first thing Monday morning and explain your son's circumstances. BTW, there is a CVW session happening the last Thur, Fri and Sat of this month. It never hurts to ask.
Cheers...

There is a phone number in the letter so that was the first place we were going to try - it says it's for his admissions officer so sounds like that's a good first step. It can't hurt to ask - all they can say is no.

FYI - They have extended the deadline for SS until April 7th. So far 1550 invites have been sent out of the 2250 spots. So 700 more kids will get picked. Not sure why they extended the SS application another week?

Its May 1st so I guess the 700 have been notified. Time to move on.

Any day now!

I just called admissions because my son still has not heard whether he has been accepted or not to NASS. They said that the final batch of letters were just mailed yesterday, April 30th. They said they could not tell me anything more. So, if there is anyone else out there like us that is still waiting, it should be any day now that you hear some news!

Son was waitlisted for NASS. Not sure why. Answered 52 of 54 SAT math questions correctly but grade curve knocked that down to a 740. Finished with almost 1400 SAT. Varsity in a sport. Approx 3.75 GPA. Wants to major in engineering.

NASS selection has less to do about credentials than it has to do with targeting different areas of the U.S. and other recruiting factors.

As we have stated countless times, not being invited to NASS isn't a sign of anything.

Apparently, quite a few notifications went out yesterday -- both acceptances and rejections. I know of someone who was called and told to disregard his rejection letter (of note, he never received a rejection letter) and that he'd been accepted. Go figure.

As Jadler03 says -- and we preach every year --- while being turned down or WL'ed for NASS is understandably discouraging, for most people, it has zero bearing on your likelihood of being accepted to USNA.

NASS is about introducing USNA to areas of the country and schools that have traditionally been under-represented at the Academy. They look for basic qualifications but they are not nearly as stringent as they will be for USNA purposes. Thus, a "more qualified" candidate can be turned down for NASS and still be accepted to USNA.

The Air Force summer seminar application opened first. My DS applied the very first day. He heard very little from them. He was disappointed. He believed that he would not get in to an Academy because he was not accepted to the Air Force SS.

He almost missed the NASS deadline, but was accepted within three weeks.

He went to NASS and really enjoyed it. He also realized that Navy was a better fit for him and he would have greater opportunities.

He received his PTR today and looking forward to I-Day.

Go Navy! Beat Army
and Air Force

DS got his invite via telephone message late yesterday afternoon. He verbally conveyed his acceptance with USNA Admissions Counselor at 7:00 PM last night and is set to attend Session 1 of NASS tomorrow. Talk about late notice! We are in Virginia, 11th District.
