NASS advice.

One other note . . . the cadre/detailers for NASS recently have been 3/C mids. If that's still true, remember that, only a couple of weeks ago, these folks were plebes.

Thus, this is their FIRST leadership experience, their first time being on the other side of the yelling and encouraging and . . . well, leading. For most, leading must be learned. As a result they won't be perfect and may well make mistakes here and there.

Our son is a detailer at NASS right now. What USNA1985 said is right - this is their first leadership experience upon finishing their plebe year. In our son's company, the NASS detailer assignment was very, very competitive, and they all feel excited and privileged to be there. They have had tons of briefs over the last couple of weeks to prepare them for their jobs, but they are all still learning as they go! :thumb:

Our son told us he's rooming with 3 other guys from different companies, which has been great. He said it's a lot of fun to meet other Mids that otherwise might not ever cross his path. He said when he worked the registration table for Session 1, many of the candidates were very nervous but quickly got into the spirit of things. Also, the Mids working the NASS assignment alternate watch duty. Our son worked the midnight to 4am shift the other night on an empty deck (hall) where no one is currently living. Didn't see a living (or otherwise!) soul all night! Watch is posted even on the deserted halls just in case someone decides to wander/sleepwalk where they don't need to be.

One other note: two years ago, our son applied but was not accepted to NASS. He was hugely disappointed! He continued to work very hard and was fortunate to receive an appointment. He's now excited that he's "finally getting his chance to go to NASS!" So if you didn't get accepted to NASS this summer, don't give up. You could still get your chance in a couple of years!

my DD is at session 1 now and completed the CFA yesterday. her scores were:

mile: 6:32
pushups: 56
pull-ups: 5
crunches: 83
b-ball throw: 26 ft. *
shuttle run: 10.1 seconds

*she is hoping the b-ball throw won't be an issue.

she seems to be thoroughly enjoying the experience and said all the detailers have been wonderful.

Those are excellent scores! I wouldn't worry about the BB throw.

pezska, I would have her doublecheck with her BGO on the bb score just to be safe. If you fail one part of the CFA, you fail it all. The rest of her scores are awesome though!

thanks, i will but i thought i read somewhere in this forum that this applies to the usma and not the usna. i do however rely on usna1985 being a good source.

pezska: Your daughter's scores (other than BB) are really excellent. Many women coming into USNA do the flexed arm hang because they can't do even one full pull-up, much less 5! Her mile time is also pretty near a perfect score (6:00), and both her crunches and push-ups are very good.

Since usna1985 is a BGO, it seems unlikely that her own BGO would have a different answer, but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask.

2012mom? the only reason I say that is because minimums aren't published and it is highly encouraged to get at least the averages on each of the CFA parts to be safe. I agree everything else looks great, but paying attention to little things can really help get those points towards teh WCS and help in the long run.

thank you all for your responses. this board has been a tremendous resource for not only my daughter but her parents as well. she first brought up her interest in the usna during the fall and we were very skeptical, at first. it seemed 'off the radar' for us since neither of us are in the military but reading through this forum gives our family a better understanding of her goal.

i would also like to thank whoever started this forum. it is exceptional in its organization.

as for her cfa results, i prefer that she consult with her BGO upon her return from NASS as to whether she should retake the entire test (since it is not super-scored). there are so many other parts and pieces to this admission process, which i find mind-boggling.

pezska;195502 as for her cfa results said:
1985 correct me if I'm wrong but CFA is a pass/fail of exceed X number of points. Your daughter should be able to ask her detailers if she had enough points to pass her CFA. Her BGO would only know if she passed by looking at their version of CIS website. In any case your daughter will know when she opens up her CIS page it will list CFA as passed if she scored enough points.

If you think this is mind boggleing- Strap in for one heck of a ride - this is the easy part.

Best of Luck in the future

Yes, it's P/F. However, candidates can get bonus points for doing exceptionally well in certain events or overall.

Actually, for privacy reasons, BGOs aren't informed as to whether a candidate has passed the CFA. However, based on experience, we have a pretty good idea. Your RD can tell you for certain. I doubt if the detailers/cadre know.
