National Pool

Just for clarification: An LOA does not guarantee you an appointment. Even if you are first alternate on a slate with a principal nomination.

Congrats Grevar to you and your son! :thumb:

Aglages- On my LOA it said specifically in bold you are guaranteed an appointment as long finish your application and get a nomination.

As did my DD's LOA. More than likely, a slot from the National pool is used if there's a ranked list and you're not principal.

I expect it also said you need to be medically qualified, unless they consider attaining that status part of "completing the application". I'm confident that's what Aglages was referring to.

it's okay, no need to stress! (well kinda haha). My BGO always told me once I have secured the nom, and got rest of the stuff all taken care of, the chances of gaining an appointment is at least 50/50. Well Im not sure if he said that in context of what State I am currently living in and congressional district and all, but yeah.

Well if you think about it, 50% chance is pretty darn high. I mean look at kids who are trying to get into prestigious ivy-league schools. Most dont even stand a chance because the chances are less than 6% for most ivy-leagues.

And SA admission is process-of-elimination. Vast majority of folks at this time have been eliminated. Literally THOUSANDS of kids now have to look into their secondary options cuz they dont have nom, or medical waiver, etc etc.

If you've made it this far, I think we should take a moment to think how lucky and fortunate we are to have our wonderful sons and daughters who are still worthy of consideration by academies.

Actually, it does, assuming you complete your application (assuming it's not already complete), are medically and CFA qualified and secure a nom from any source (and, of course, don't do something stupid from a legal/character standpoint). Getting a nom can be a huge deal for some candidates/

Thank you everyone for the information about noms. Yesterday, when I saw that the appointment was already offered to someone from our congressional district ... I could not breath. My DS applied for all nomination sources, but he only got congressional nom to USNA and our senator nominated him for USMA and I am not sure what will happen with application for VP nom. You are saying it is still 50%, this is a great news!

So if a candidate ends up in the national pool and their nomination is from their congressman but someone else is chosen off the slate where would the Academy pull a nom from? Is that where the VP noms come in?

I believe the "Qualified Alternates"/National Pool come from SECNAV primarily. (And at this point, it's an appointment that's pulled, not a nomination.)

And it was my understanding that only one candidate will receive the VP nom this year (assuming there's only 1 spot open). Many will apply for the VP nom, but it's a long shot.

Only one out of everyone? I thought the VP had unlimited?

VP gets 5 slots. They are assigned by the academies. Part of the shell game of moving noms around.

No, my understanding was that the VP got 5 per year. Someone with more smarts than me is going to have to clear it up.....

Good lord! This is public information and easy enough to find out. From whitehouse.gov
The Vice President is the only authorized nominating authority who can nominate U.S. citizens without geographical restrictions. He may have a maximum number of five nominees in attendance at each authorized academy at any one time. Normally, he has one or two vacancies each year.

The Vice President is allowed 5 mids at any one time -- just like a MOC

There is no need to pull a nomination from anywhere. They already have a nomination and are entitled to an appointment if they are good enough. They simply didn't win on their congressional (or other) slate. They are simply appointed to fill a remaining vacancy in the class, in rank order.
