National Waiting List

Bravo and riroka -

back up just a minute. This is what happened LAST YEAR. No idea if it will happen this year.
Now - how can they do this?
First of all most candidates who are FQNS also applied for a 4 year ROTC scholarship. So, their needs are already met. For the few who only applied to West Point, if they qualifed for WP they more than qualified for ROTC.
In the Class of 2012 there were only about 700 candidates who were FQNS. We are not talking huge numbers here.
Until this year - the Army could not give away 4 year scholarships. If a qualified student walked into the ROTC office in August of 2007 or even 2008, they would have been offered a scholarship. In fact, back in 2007 Cadet Command extended the deadline for applying for a scholarship well into the spring.
Then the economy crashed, we started pulling out of Iraq and Army ROTC became popular.

Like I said in a prior post - I regret mentioning it because I have no idea if the Army will extend the same deal this year.

Mmm I'm not trying to sound accusing or anything, but it seems that your chief motive for applying to WP and ROTC scholarships is the financial advantages...
you do sound accusing. If you are a student with no financial worries or concerns then bully for you. If you continue in the Army you will undoubted find some who would not be able to have a college education without the Army's help. Judge not that ye be judged.

hey Justamom,
Thanks. Ya I will not be able to pay for college fully. I live in NM and we have the lottery scholarship(pays for a big chunk) but it doesnt cover everything. Hopefully the ROTC deal you described is still in use because i want to become a leader in the military more than anything. But without a college education I will only be a follower. I will still try to attend college if The ROTC thing is no longer offered but if the debt becomes to great i will enlist in the army and vua la!

But without a college education I will only be a follower.

I just want to say that you can be a leader as an officer or as an enlisted. Even the lowest ranking individual is a leader. They are the ones who set the standard and how well they perform affects their peer's performance as well.

I got the thin white envelope today saying that I have been placed on the national waiting list =/
I emailed my liaison officer asking him what my chances were of getting into wp from the nwl and he said that he didn't have a good answer for me since the list is so volitant.
I suppose that's better than a flat-out rejection!
Is it true that:
a) WP waiting lists are different from civilian university waiting lists in that a significant number of appointments are granted from the list? (unlike civilian schools, where if you get put on the waiting list, that's just as good as getting a rejection because so few people get chosen from the list)
b) it will be harder to get appointed from the national waiting list this year?

I don't know about the second question but as far as the first I would say its the opposite since the service academies have a higher percentage of people accept their appointments than the average college. I don't know this from actual numbers though.

The other post with information from the Far West Regional area admissions rep, Captain Cuevas, stated that there was an 81 percent acceptance rate so far. The deadline for accepting or denying is May 1st. If some candidates deny their appointment, wouldn't that leave room for a number of people on the national waiting list to have a chance of a late appointment?

NV USMA MOM: you are absolutely correct. It is waaaay too early for anyone to give up. One of my son's wp friends was appointed mid June...he is doing very well at USMA...no one wears a sign w/ date of appointment around the neck (or one that says "I had an LOA"). Good luck to all who are waiting!

Some recent stats:

Cpt. Cuevas is the outreach officer in the admissions office for the Far West Region. I met her earlier this week during my son's overnight visit.

She has a Facebook post that indicated:
"So, here is the latest: as of February 22, 1,100 students have been offered seats to West Point. With an 81% acceptance rate, that means we only have 500 seats left."
See: http://www.facebook.com/Captain.Cuevas

I'm pretty sure she means appointments when she writes "seats".

In past years, the published stats indicated that typically 1600 appointments are offered. And only 1300 are actually admitted. As in past years, there are many candidates who may have appointments to more than one academy. During my son's visit, another candidate also had an appt. to the Naval Academy. The candidate still was not sure which one to attend. As these candidates make their decision, people from the NWL are offered appointments as slots are freed up.

As for ROTC scholarships, yes, there are a finite number. Again, some may have both a scholarship offer as well as an appointment. Either may be freed up once a final decision is made.

Good luck to everyone on the NWL, and may the time pass quickly. I know it can be really tough waiting.

There is another factor to add in: as of today (7 Mar 10) there are 213 Cadet Candidates at USMAPS, from past years statistics, about 205 (+/- 5) will be attending the Class of 2014. So far out of that 213, about 50 have received their Appointments already. Then the AOG (?) scholarships are still out there.

I know for fact the Prepsters are on pins and needles this year like no other; the competition is huge, the 2.0 and go is out the window.

I'd like to update my post above: only 25 CC's were Appointed as of today to the USMA, not 50.

The bulk of the CC's should be notified by mid April.

Some context on the "81% acceptance rate". This refers to past year's statistics. Not that 81% have accepted so far.

This is comment from Captain Cuevas suggesting a possible outcome based on past year's admissions outcome. It does not indicate number who have accepted thus far.

When Captain Cuevas gave her briefing to visiting cadet candidates earlier this week, she stated to the parents in attendance that this was another year with many outstanding candidates - the prior Sunday (Feb 28), the admissions team was making their final review of applicant files.

USMA has rolling admissions. Applicants who completed their files earlier had a good chance of getting an appointment, provided all the requirements were completed and met, and that they were near the top in their Whole Candidate Score when the admissions board reviewed their files - medical, academics, outside activities and leadership. At this late date, there were many placed on the NWL, who otherwise might have received an appointment if considered earlier. Hence the advice to complete your file as quickly as practical, and to continually update your file with new info. This is especially helpful advice for Juniors just starting the process.

As has been previously written, applicants placed on the NWL are ranked top-to-bottom based on their whole candidate score. I am not sure whether additions to one's file at this time will move them up the list. Of course, applicants who remove themselves from consideration will be taken off the NWL, and move those below, up.

At this time, the best course of action for those on the NWL is to stay in contact with their admissions office regional commander and the local field force people. They have access to the current status.

Good luck to all; I hope the wait for a decision is short, and with the outcome you hope for.

By law - WP must admit 150 cadets (with Congressional noms) from the NWL based on WCS.

To fill the class, they can select cadets from NWL without regard to the WCS.
A 3:1 ratio of Congressional to Service connected noms must be maintained.

Is it a bad sign that I just received my NWL letter today, the 8th of March?

wow being offered a 4 year full ride in a rejection letter is pretty sweet IMO

thats what i said! haha It makes sense tho, because if you are qualified to go to WP then you are easily qualified to do ROTC anywhere. :thumb: Hope they do it this year too!!!:thumb:

My son just got the NWL letter as well. Very specific that HUNDREDS WILL BE CHOSEN FROM THIS LIST. We will call the regional commander to see if we can get an idea of where his position lies on the list. Anyone else have anything to add? Should we really visit West Point on this news?
Kind regards

Make sure your son keeps updating his file with anything new that he can add to it.
Have you visited WP before? I would at least once even if I were on the NWP. It would still be great to visit and it is a pretty nice place.

Were you able to find out a range of where you son is on the NWL?

My son's letter also said that hundreds will be chosen from this list when he received it back in January and we were told around 400 back then as well. However our last email said that they expect to make almost zero offers this year from the NWL if things kept up the way there were.

Anyone else hear this?
