Does anyone know if the Naval Academy Candidate Book is helpful? I can't really tell if it will have good information in it and I don't want to pay $20 if it doesn't. Thanks!

i own this and brief points as well as leadership: the annapolis way, and yes they are all very worthwhile books. filled with alot of information and advice

We have all of these as well - we all read them - even the grandparents! Very worthwhile. I'm sure we could all write a book - what a ride!

does it help someone prepare for the academy well?

Only if you make use of the advice. Cutting to the chase: Learn time management. Learn how to study, and then do it. Be well-rounded in your activities. Demonstrate leadership. Get into your best physical shape.

I just took a formal poll of former midshipmen, and none of us have read any of these books. They are all for sale in the Mid Store but that is just to get your money. None of us knew that anyone actually bought them. They make good gifts for family. The only book you'll need - it is worthless too - is Reef Points. You will remember the stupid information in there for the rest of your life, even if you try to forget it. To piggy back off of 2012mom, just learn how to be a mid when you get there. Learn how to study(not like high school), learn time management(not like high school), and mind your own business for at least the first three semesters.

I have both mentioned books. More accurately, my parents had them, but mixed them in with all my books when they shipped them, so now I have them. I just glanced at them. Brief Points is pretty useless; it gives essentially the same info you'll get from admissions, BGOs, and various USNA propaganda. The glossary, for example, contains lots of cutesy phrases no mid will ever use. The Naval Academy Candidate book, while probably still unnecessary, still had information that was accurate and didn't gloss over a lot of the down side.

Either way, you don't really need either book. Neither is really going to prepare you for being a midshipman, because they present a pretty idealized version of the Academy for you to look at. I suppose you could use them for admissions help, but you can get that elsewhere.

I'd get your info from current mids and recent graduates (older graduates have a tendency to gloss over or glorify the negative).

Where can I get a copy of the reef points?
I heard it doesn't help as they change every year but I still would love to own one :p

The midshipmen store. Wish I would have known, I threw mine out. You certainly could have had it.

I went down for a summer program but my team leader wouldn't let me go to mid store.

when I left on saturday it was closed :(

what kind of information are you looking for? If you are wanting to save money and you just want to know more about the Acadmey and what it has to offer, how the application process works and all that stuff I recommend hitting up the USNA webiste and downloading the catalog (and its free!) - go to the admission tab and you should be able to navigate your way from there to find the catalog and whatever else you might want to know about the Academy.

2016:You might call the Mid store, to see if you can buy by phone.

My Mid, who was a NASS squad leader, had wanted to take the squad to the Mid store, but there just wasn't time for it.

I recommend buying at the USNA bookstore if at all possible because it supports the brigade. However, you can purchase used books online at amazon.com.

The Mid store proceeds benefit the Brigade, even if you order on-line. (Is there even a separate "USNA bookstore"???)

Agree with usna02 that there is plenty of free info available. If you become a Plebe, you will be given your own copy, and you will become intimately familiar with that year's Reef Points. Until then, everything you need to know you can find for free.

you can buy many, if not all, of the books found in the midstore at navyonline.com :shake:
