Should my DS get a dental crown before reporting on I-Day or should he just wait and let the USNA dental clinic take care of it at a later date? also are Mids allowed to wear orthodontic retainers at night?

I would do the crown now. They usually take 2 appointments and plebes don't have that kind of time. Also, if he waits he runs the risk of needing a root canal and that would be an unnecessary mess.

    No idea on the retainer.

Get the crown now. Crowns take forever in the military to get. Mids have time to get things like this done, but its just easier to get it done now. Yes, it might take longer to arrange an appointment during off periods or a class they feel more comfortable missing (like PE vs. Calc). Bring his retainer. He will be able to wear them at night. Now if he remembers Plebe Summer to wear it... might be a long shot, but that is only 6 weeks.

Crown him now! An abcessed tooth is nothing to be fooled around with.

My S had veneers done before reporting for Plebe Summer. When he reported and had his dental exam, the USNA dentists were all raving about how good the veneer work was. Our home dentist was so proud...

Agree, Crown now, bring retainer. My DD didn't wear hers during plebe summer, but she wore it once the academic year started.

Yes, Do wisdom teeth before I-day. They used to send out something with the BFE requesting you to have them removed prior to reporting.

With respect to your retainer question...the answer is yes. My son has a retainer he wears at night.

Wisdom teeth removal is NOT a requirement for any of the academies. IF your dentist indicates there is a medical issue with the teeth and recommends their removal, that is what people are talking about. Removal of healthy wisdom teeth is NOT a requirement. There are several older threads on that topic.

USAFA highly recommends removal of wisdom teeth unless your dentist says they're coming in fine and won't cause any problems in the future. If you decide to have wisdom teeth pulled, it must be done more than 6 weeks prior to reporting for I-day.
