Well...I've been reading multiple posts & wish I knew u all 8 months ago! Son applied, was interviewed & told "I would be very surprised if you don't rec an appt." On Mar 15th rec'd "We regret to inform you..." Apparently almost dbl the applicants this year and to those who recd appointment "kudos!" Son is going to Maritime Academy in NY & we need advice as to what his best course of action is while attending...already a student pilot, cert diver & has strong math/science bkground. He's decided to reapply to USCGA more determined than ever now and would love any info/advice from someone IN the CG...Maritime has strong Naval & Marine ties but any advice is good advice...:thumb:

First tell your son to keep his head up. Congratulations on being accepted at SUNY Maritime. If he wants to go to the Academy he should make good use of his time at SUNY. Grades, demonstrated leadership through a host of required and volunteer activities would be required.
He should understand there are many ways to seek a commission in the military. I have attached a web site about U.S. Coast Guard Commissioning programs. He should review this site thoroughly. He will find answers to many of his questions.

    Good Luck

good luck to your boy. i know how hard it is to sit by and watch your obviously qualified boy get overlooked for something that is near and dear to his heart. it sounds like he is a great kid, and if he reapplies i would venture his odds are not just good, but great! my son got in the second time around, and though is was hard to persevere, it was well worth the months of waiting and wondering. also, the extra year was a benefit in many unexpected ways.

    good luck again.
