Penn State's Ed DeChellis has been named Navy's new men's basketball coach. This is exciting news. While his record did not reflect such, he did a great coaching job @ PSU, and the Big 10'll be less for his leaving.

Navy is really nailing those holes where they've been deficient in athletics. Ironically, DeChellis, originally from W.PA, is 35 miles removed from where Larry Bock, the new women's vball coach ... and his assistant Kaitlyn Kozak are coming from. Central PA ...that hotbed of coaches!

Navy might well become a powerhouse in both of these. Both great appointments. Stay tuned! :thumb:

According to the Los Angeles Times, he took a $250k pay cut at his alma mater Penn State, which he described as a "dream job" to come to Navy.

What's wrong in Happy Valley?

I'm certain he will do well at USNA, certainly better than Navy's most recent poor (11-20, 6-8 conference) season performance.

New Navy Hoop Coach

I had the pleasure to watch him coach several games over the last few years at Happy Valley. While yes his record doesn't reflect the accomplishments here. He had to to do more with less. He told the press exactly what felt on Monday, that he got no support. Which he will get at the yard. By the way very approachable person.

ditto RGK ... PSU is an odd graveyard of basketball (men's) possibilities. The Nits might land a winner, but if so, he'll be the first in 70 or 80 years ... since John Lawther took over after taking Westminster to the NIT! Until Joe go(es) ... I'm afraid this is a losing cause. Tim Curley, AD, is a nice guy, but he'd not rock the boat to save his grandma from drowning, and in any case, he can't. Chet Gladchuk'd last 20 minutes in Happy Valley because he'd anticipate actually doing something which'd be a fatal mistake. We've all heard about trying to turn an aircraft carrier in the middle of the Severn? Not easily done. In any case, Navy's the big winner on this one ... and whoever follows Ed De in Happy V? Take a number in the land of frustration, I'm afraid.

P.S. GREAT pieces in this week's Capital Gazette re: Ed and this move.
