DS received an LOA in September and we have an overnight visit scheduled for this week. What type of attire is appropriated for him to wear to classes while he is there? I am assuming something like khakis and a polo; however, I didn't know if he should maybe wear a tie instead of a polo? My other question is in regards to Plebe year. I realize that as Plebes they do not have many priviledges, but do they get any leave during the academic year other than Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring break? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I had my official recruiting visit and I wore like a polo sweater and dress pants. You want to be 'neat' but not over dressed. I didn't see any guy over nighters wearing ties. He will also be walking…ALOT so make sure he wears comfortable shoes. I wore flats that kept slipping and that was very annoying. Plebes don't really get a lot of passes for leaving campus, from what I have gathered, but they can earn them from accomplishing certain things. I had my visit on a weekend they had a home football game, he should attend one, they are fun.

Khakis and a polo would be just fine. Make sure he has plenty of warm clothing. We got snow here today so be prepared if you're visiting in the next few months.

As for passes, there are four days for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, and a week for Spring Leave. Each semester, plebes are given one "base pass" which means they can leave anywhere over night for the weekend. A lot of people will take this pass on a long weekend (Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day). It's also possible for plebes to get one performance pass each semester. Basically, if you excel in something you are able to put in a memo saying why you should be awarded a pass for something. For instance, my Beast company won best company first detail so I could get a performance pass for that. Plebes also get one religious pass each semester which can be used to go on a retreat with one of the various religious organizations, as well as a spirit pass, which means they sign up to attend an Army sports game not at West Point and get the rest of the weekend to do whatever they want. There are also tons of opportunities to get out of West Point with various clubs and other activities. I have not and probably will not use all of my passes this semester. I'm from the west coast so getting home and back just over a three day weekend is expensive, but I know plenty of people who've done it. There are plenty ways to occupy your time at West Point on the weekends, and if nothing else, it's always nice to catch up on sleep and homework! Bottom line, it is very possible to get out of West Point on the weekends, even as a plebe!

Your son will be attending after class athletics with his host (or someone elseO so bring workout clothing. My DS did an overnight last week and he also worked out at 5:30 AM on the 2nd day with his host. He needs a towel too. The "what to wear, what to bring" list is on the confirmation email that your DS received.

This is copied from the email my son received about his upcoming visit:

CLOTHING

While suits are not required, candidates are asked to wear casual dress, such as ironed slacks/trousers, loafers or similar comfortable shoes, polo or button-down shirts. Blazers, sweaters/cardigans and cold weather attire as appropriate. All visitors ages 16 and older are required to bring a Photo ID.

THINGS TO BRING

Candidates should pack an overnight bag and include a change of clothes, toiletries, a towel and something to read or study during evening study period. Bathrooms and showers are not located in the rooms, so bring pajamas, sweats, or a robe. Candidates might want to bring workout or running clothes as well.
