My son (a Junior) was accepted to NASS last month. I stumbled across this site a couple days ago and am amazed by the vast amount of information available on a variety of subjects.

We had not really looked into any service academies, but a pamphlet from USNA re: NASS was mailed to my son in February - it was the first we had ever heard about it. Son applied, and lo and behold, he received an acceptance letter less than 3 weeks later.

Now I'm playing catch-up and trying to learn all I can about NASS and USNA. It's making me proud to be an American (and also humbling because I see all the hard work the young men and women of our country are doing to gain an appointment to a SA).

Thanks for providing a great forum!

Welcome aboard! Congrats to your DS on getting to go to NASS. If your DS (Dear Son) chooses to go to USNA, or any other SA, be ready for a really wild ride. It is (debatedly) more difficult to get an appointment than it is to get into any other Ivy League school. Between getting a nomination, teacher and other recommendations, SATs, ACTs, Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), and gathering all the other information you need is quite a job. All that being said, serving our country as an officer is a life filled with honor. Good luck!

For those who are new to this forum, it is good to search back on older posts from prior years. The same basic topics get asked every year and you can quickly gain a lot of information by simply reading the older posts. The fixed topics at the top of the page also contain a lot of good, basic information.

Some practices do change from year to year at the academies but a lot of the concepts relating to requirements and how to apply, how to get a NOM, etc. remain relatively constant. And no matter how many different ways applicants try to ask the question, there is still no one on here who can 'rate your chances' for getting an appointment just by looking at your h.s. resume.

Since almost anyone can join and post information here, it is also good to remember the difference between fact and opinion. These are fairly complex topics and no one person will ever be an expert on every topic.
