Okay, so I have been reading this forum for months, thank you for all the answers and help you all have given my family. So here are a couple of quick questions.
My son was told by his coach last weekend that he recieved his appointment, and that an official letter for him to sign would be coming in the mail. So he is in, correct? We can breathe a little easier now?
Second question: Yesterday we received a postcard in the mail a notice that he received a monimation from the Presidential category. It says "YOU ARE NOW AN OFFICIAL CANDIDATE." What does that mean? We have an appointment with our interview with our Senator on Tuesday, hoping for his nomination. We aren't sure what this postcard means exactly........... seems like we would have gotten something much more official. Thanks for your help.

Is the coach trustworthy? Do you believe he is competent, that he knows what he is talking about?

If so, congratulations!

Keep a lookout for that large white envelope!

It means that your son, as the son of an active duty (8+ years) or retired career military parent has received one of the unlimited number of Presidential nominations available. It is entirely possible that it was mailed before any word of his appointment status was confirmed to you by the coach.

If the coach is indeed someone who is credible and your son already has an appointment, there is no need for any other nominations. Once the appointment is in your hands (not LOA, but the official APPOINTMENT) then there is no need to go to any more interviews, he is IN. But until you have that official appointment folder in your possession, continue with any and all nomination interviews.

No, a notice that he received a nomination from any source is usually confirmed with a simple postcard to the candidate.

As luigi said, a lot has to do with where the coach heard this info. Usually, even with a recruited athlete, a high school coach isn't the person who normally hears about these things. I personally would call my ALO. S/He would know, or could find out.

As for the presidential, what luigi said is correct. "Except he meant LIMITED, not UNLIMITED" nominations. Congrats on the nomination.

As for visiting your senator, continue with EVERYTHING ON COURSE until you actually get an appointment offer in hand. Nothing worse than canceling nomination interviews or anything else, and finding out that the information you heard from the coach wasn't "EXACTLY" what was told to him. ALO's are reliable. If S/He doesn't know, or can't find out, then proceed as normal with everything until you get that big envelope. best of luck... mike.....

No, I meant UNLIMITED. There are no limits on the number of Presidential nominations as I stated in my post.

You are confusing nominations with appointments (and I KNOW you know the difference! )

Is he a recruited athlete? If so I would probably trust the coach, if not, then I would probably not read into it. Here's the reason why. Boards meet on Monday, appointments and LOA's are typed on Wednesday and in the mail by Thursday. Thus, most candidates find out on a Friday or Saturday. If you have not received it by now, and your on line page has not changed, then I would think the coach might have gotten terms confused.

If he is a recruited athlete, he might have found out by the AF coach that they selected him, and it is just a matter of time before going up to the board, but in essence it is a done deal.

thanks

Sorry, I should have been more clear. When he was on his official visit to the academy last weekend, his coach at the academy told him he had just found out from my son had recieved his appointment.
We, being retired military, are in agreement and that is how we are handling it, waiting for it in writing. We are trying not to spread the news to much, just in case. But it is hard not smiling all the time!!!
Again, thanks for all your input. I can't tell you all how much we/I appreciate all your advice on this forum!!!

You are correct Luigi. In theory, there is an "UNLIMITED" number of presidential nominations. Actually, probably closer to 2,346,432,645,753,456, However; if the Original Poster's son receives an appointment using that nomination; "Which sounds probable if he has indeed received an appointment, and hasn't gotten to interviewing his MOC yet"; then he received 1 of 100 limited appointments utilizing that nomination.

If the AFA coach said it then, yes I would be pulling out the bubble wrap! Totally different than a hs coach.

The postcards sent by Academy Admissions aren't really inaccurate, but can be significantly delayed. For example, last year this time I received a postcard telling me my application was complete, even though several days earlier they had sent me my LOA.

Very true, by the time we received any nom via a postcard, including the Presidential it had already posted on his log in page.

However; if the Original Poster's son receives an appointment using that nomination; "Which sounds probable if he has indeed received an appointment, and hasn't gotten to interviewing his MOC yet"; then he received 1 of 100 limited appointments utilizing that nomination.

I agree, however I posted no such thing, and neither did the original poster.

I specifically made a distinction between a nomination and an appointment.

Maybe you need to go back and re-read my entire post before correcting it again.
