NMMI 2013-2014 USMMA Prep

I thought USNA was Foundation scholarships and USMA was AOG scholarships. Did you receive a Foundation scholarship?

Congrats on that! NMMI is always proud of our USNA preps and their sucess rate.

I made some changes to the "costs" web page and am waiting for the IT/IS folks to publish the final version. When that is done you should see some good news. One of the big changes we are adding this year for USNA preps is an additional $1k Regent's Scholarship (open to all). Then we have two additional "Rodger Staubach" scholarships that DS can apply for.

Our Athletic Dept. always brags about how Roger played football here. I like to smile and add that it was his ACADEMIC achievement that got him the appointment to the USNA

Sports and Self-Prep at NMMI

Maj Hanak,
Do you have any advice for a student looking at self-prepping for the USNA at NMMI and, at the same time, playing a varsity sport? As a parent I'd be concerned about the importance and intensity of the prep program versus the time commitment on a varsity sports team. Have you seen a difference in the success ratio of team members versus non team members? The other side of me thinks that the sports can contribute to his "whole person" score and might help him that way along with good grades.

He has been actively recruited by one of your varsity teams and they asked for, and he gave them, a verbal commitment in November and just a couple of weeks ago the coach told my son "absolutley" they are still interested in him. But no paperwork yet........so I'm not sure any more.
Thank you.

You are correct, he did receive a Foundation Scholarship. I've been reading so many boards that I just had a senior moment.

Muffin Man:

The academic proram here is pretty demanding. None of the sponsored preps here (USAFA, USNA, USMA, or USMMA) are asked to play a varsity sport. On the other hand, IF you can balance a tough class schedule AND participate in sports (what it's like at a service academy) - more power to you.

As to the type of sport (my opinion only) playing a team sport is better than an individual sport (active-duty military fights as a "team"), being a leader of a team sport is better than just participation.

The only self prep athlete we had appointed this year was a baseball player to West Point. I'm talking about the college program - not high school.

Does this help?

It does help. It is a team sport he's considering. We expect it will be a significant challange to try and succesfully balance a college varsity sport and maintain quality academics. DS will need to think hard about his priorities and the level of commitment he can maintain.

Did NIMMI have any non-athlete self-preps earn appointments for this coming fall? Mostly interested in the USNA and possibly USAF.

Thank you.

This year was a tough one. NMMI had college self preps appointed to: USMA (3), USAFA (1), USNA (1), USMMA (1). Many are still on "hold/wait" status, but I'm optimistic that more are to follow.

On the sponsored side: All Falcon Foundation Preps have appointments. We have one still waiting for WP. The USNA and USMMA preps will meet their respective boards later this month.
