FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NMMI CADET DIES IN ACCIDENT

It is with deep regret and sorrow that New Mexico Military Institute announces the death of Cadet Corey Rozell, 22, of Whitefield, Maine, who died February 18, 2011, from injuries sustained in a traffic accident near Deming, New Mexico.

Cadet Rozell was on furlough and travelling to Arizona at the time of the accident. Cadet Rozell, who held the grade of Bosun’s Mate 3rd Class in the U.S. Coast Guard, was enrolled at NMMI in preparation for attending the United States Coast Guard Academy and receiving a commission as an officer in the Coast Guard.

Oh no. Such a small community. Saying a prayer for him, his family and friends.

Sad, but true. I had to wait for Public affairs and the legal folks here to make the statements before I could comment.

On a positive note: The way the Corps of Cadets came together to honor one of their own was truly inspiring. During the weekend our Ceremonial Flame Guard lit candles outside his room (Cory Rozell's roommate* was also in the vehicle) and took turns guarding it. The Corps had a Silver Taps (three trumpets echoing Taps in a "black out" of the barracks) Tuesday night. We had a packed Chapel for a memorial service yesterday. CAPT Finton from the USCGA came and spoke during the service.

*The roommate is also a USCGA Prep who is in a hospital in El Paso, TX.

Cory Rozell enlisted in the USCG in 2008 and was a Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class when he came to NMMI. We will miss him.

He is Cadet Austin Cowan, 19, of Seminole, Florida. We are waiting to see if he will return to his studies here. I don't want to speculate on much at this point in time. The information I am recieving is very positive concerning his recovery.

Luigi,

Cory was enlisted and had been to "Boot", etc prior to coming here. Austin enlisted as part of the CGA Scholars Program. All USCGA Scholars (here and at Marion) are on active duty as E-2's. They draw full pay and allowances. They are discharged on the final day of school. All the time here counts as federal service for longevity raises and retirement.

The news release did not make this very clear. The USCGA Scholars go to New London in a "Pre-Swab Summer" program and do all their enlistment paperwork there before heading off to college. Hope this helps with clarifying Austin's status. Thanks for the original post. I intended to do it, but it's been real busy here the last couple of days.
