My son got a nomination to USMMA, but I think they may not accept him directly since his ACT score was not that good.

If USMMA were planning on sponsoring him to go to NMMI, how soon would he find that out? Thank you.

I must've asked the wrong question.

When do kids find out if they get accepted to the prep school and sponsored by the service academy? What time frame is that usually, Jan, Feb or later?

I can only speak definitively for USAFA but I would think that the others are similar.

There is no "set time period" that candidates are notified of PS or "alternative PS" selections. I know of a couple USAFA candidates in my state that have already been offered the PS. I know of none, in my state, that have been offered any other options, at present. I am sure we will have some.

"Normally" they come around the time of the "mass blast" of appointments: March/April. I can speak for myself and tell you that I was offered that option in late April when I was a candidate...a while ago.

Sorry for the delay in answering, we were on break for the holidays. The short answer is that I usually get the final list names of sponsored USMMA Preps in the May/June time frame. When appointments are offered, the academies (all of them) give the candidate three options: 1. Accept, 2. Decline, or 3. Wait until 1 May. Many of the USMMA candidates are also looking for appointments from the USAFA, USMA, USNA, USCGA, and have multiple applications in work . After the "dust settles" on direct appointments the USMMA will start finalizing the list of the sponsored Preps.

That said; fully qualified candidates are offered appointments early. The USMMA has a "rolling" admissions board (the next one will be the end of this month) and makes offers on a continuing basis. Does this help?

I think my son is in the same boat. Got a nomination from Rep. but was just told his SAT verbal is about 20 points shy of what they want. Everything else is in, DODMERB qual, Eagle Scout, 3.85 GPA and has been taking Pashtu for 2 years, Boy State etc........ Should he let the schools know he is open to a Prep School or something like Valley Forge? VFMC called him and offered 1/2 tuition if he comes there.

He should DEFINITELY let his ALO/BGO/Etc., know this in VERY SHORT order! I have candidates tell me early on: IF you are not offered an appointment, are you interested in any PS, etc?

If they say "YES!!!" Then I know they're really serious about the SA...if they say "academy or bust"...well...it doesn't impact my work on their behalf, but it might keep me from putting in their evaluation that they should be considered for the PS, etc.

FYI...MOST ALO's put those comments in the initial evaluation we do. I have written MANY that say up front: PERFECT PS, FALCON FOUNDATION, NMMI, etc., candidate!

    It can help!

    Thank you everyone.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It sounds like he needs to write USMMA that he's interested in the prep school. Also, that he should call a liaison officer. Appreciate the info.

Coloradomom: I would still have him (re)take the SAT's and ACT's until he gets the "magic numbers" - 560/24 math, 520/22 English. The USMMA is the only academy who posts their min. qualifiying scores. You did not say if your son was a recruited athlete. The Athletic Dept. at the USMMA works with the Admissions folks and can make a difference as to whether he gets a sponsorship.

jagabiti: Same advice on the SAT/ACT. You did not say which academy your son was looking at. When you "shop" for a civilian Prep School look at who that academy sends their people to. VFMC is a fine school with a great reputation. They are one of the five civilian schools the Falcon Foundation offers their Preps to go to. As they also offer NMMI, Marion, Wentworth, and Northwestern. The USCGA uses NMMI and Marion. The USMMA uses only NMMI. (actually I do know of one sponsored Prep who went to VFMC form the USMMA as a special case.) The USNA (Naval Academy Foundation) and USMA (Association of Graduates) use a host of schools.

My DS is trying to get into USMMA....he is being recruited for Lacrosse but is a little below minimum on ACT math. He has a congressional nomination. Coach gill has asked if he would be open to NMMI. My question is....if he goes to NMMI does he have to re apply to USMMA the next year? What is the process of admission from the prep school? He has an ROTC full scholorship to his school of choice and we need to know the facts to make an informed decision!!! Also....would he have to re apply for nominations the next year?

    Thanks!

Thank you Major Hanak. He is scheduled to take the SAT test on Jan. 22nd. I appreciate those magic numbers. Yes, the football coach is interested in him, but he still needs those magic numbers. Thank you very much.

    Coloradomom; You're welcome!

Hoov2011; Great questions. Yes, he still has to reapply to the USMMA next year. However, it is a very stramlined process. We re-do the Parts 1 and 2 in the first semester and the Part 3 in the second. I hold seminars on a regular basis for them to do those things. Yes, he still needs to reapply for the nom. Again however, when most nominating sources know that an individual is a sponsored USMMA prep here at NMMI on a USMMA scholarship; the reissue of that nom. is pretty solid. Lastly, any sponsored prep from any academy is an "automatic admit" to NMMI. We take the cover letter from DoDMERB as proof of medical qualification and have other admissions criteria that are waived or simplified for sponsored Preps. I would wait until you know if you are getting your sponsorship first though before applying. All USMMA sponsored preps get coded in the computer as "in-state" residents for tuition purposes. If you apply too early (and are not from NM) billing info gets confusing.

You did not ask but; he will also have to retake the CFA. We also take care of this and send in the scores as a group.

    To Major Hanak

I just read your post and it looks like my son applied to NMMI too soon. I wanted to make sure he would get in, I didn't realize it would be confusing for your school. Will the Admissions Office at NMMI hold his application and attachments until they hear if he gets sponsored from USMMA? Okay, thank you.

It will be OK. It's not so much that it is "confusing" but less work for you and our Admissions folks. CPT Christina Lauritzen is the admissions officer here who handles both sponsored and self preps. I'd call her at 575-624-8162 and explain your situation. She is the expert in her field and may have some advise for you.
