My son received a phone call tonight telling him that he is receiving a NMMI slot from the USMMA. I have a few questions though, and I could wait to receive paperwork in the mail for the answers, but I'm entirely too excited to do that.

1. Would there be a lot of expense for our family? When they say it is "sponsored," it doesn't mean it's no cost to us, I'm sure.

2. Will he have to go through the Nomination process again after his year at NMMI?

3. Will he have to apply and be accepted by the USMMA after that year?

4. Are there other questions I should be asking?

First of all, congratulations to your son! I'm sponsored at MMI as a West Point prepster, so things may be slightly different, but when I was considering NMMI, I believe the cost for me would have been around $6000, but USMMA may give a different scholarship amount with their sponsorship. We did have to reapply to West Point this year, but as long as we take care of business (grades, staying out of trouble, etc.) throughout the school year, the magical appointment is "ours to lose." :thumb:

1. You'll have to pay some of your sons tuition. And for books.
2. Yes, but even if he doesn't get a nomination on his own USMMA will find him one as long as he meets the requirements of his contract.
3.Yes, but he's guaranteed admissions as long as he keeps a 2.0

Congrats!

Congrats on the sponsorship!!

1. There will be expenses you will have to incur. Such as travel, uniforms and such. There are a whole host of grants and scholarships available to apply for that can cover most of the costs. There should be a list on NNMI web site. Your son will need to apply for ASAP.
2. Yes, he must apply again for a nom. However, his situation as a “sponsored” student it should not be difficult. There are two types of students A. “free agents”, student’s who are attending on their own dime hoping to get an appointment and B. “sponsored students”, the academies want him and are willing to invest in him. He will be there with other students that are in the same situation as he. They need their study skills sharpened, bring up their SAT/ACT scores. This is a great thing!
3. He will have to reapply. However, again he is sponsored so it will not be quit as dramatic. They want him, just need to polish him up a bit.
4. They will take care of his SOEs, CARs and other applications questions you may have. Ask about grants and scholarships.

Good luck and congrats!
