I did not receive a telephone yesterday from my son (and I had my cell all day and know that I did not miss it). Can any past parents or midshipman out there offer any explanations as to why a candidate would not be able to call home? Did any one else not receive a telephone call? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

As a new parent, I don't know what to say other than; 'Sorry the call did not come" ......hopefully someone with some insight will chime in. Keep the faith.

If he has a girlfriend could he of called her? If not I'd call the school and see what you can find out. I may be wrong here but that's what I'd do.

No, he doesn't have a girlfriend, so I know its not that. Who would you call at the school?

Just a little more info: I received a call on Saturday from his coach saying that he had had a few dehydration issues and was seeing the medical staff. His not calling maybe related to that. Any idea who I should call to get info on his medical condition? Don't want to be a pain...but now I'm a bit worried!

    phone call

The commandant is charged with the health, safety, and well-being of candidates and mids. I would start there. They won't be able to tell you a thing about the health issues due to HIPPA laws. But, maybe they could find a way for your candidate to call you.

    They're busy....in trouble....forgot.....having too much fun....

Who knows. Phone calls are definitely not a right at an academy. During my first summer I made one call, it was short and direct...and then over as quickly as it started. I remember the who experience being pretty traumatic.

It's unusual not to get the call, but not unheard of. We got the first one, and DIDN'T get the second one...the whole platoon?Company? lost the privilege (I don't remember why , now). We were VERY disappointed.

(If the coach is the one who called you before, it sounds like you have a contact)

I liked what someone else posted... No news is good news (esp from health issue).

Know that they are in good hands.

Although extremely dissapointing to not receive a call I highly recommend NOT calling the Academy. The reason I say this is at best the result will be a very rushed 5 minute call which will then be followed by your candidate being singled out for the rest of indoc. The worst will be no phone call and your candidate still being singled out for the rest of indoc for their parents calling about them.

Either way it won't turn out very good for your son in the long run. It's only another six days until they will get another chance to call again. Remember this is but a short sprint during a very long race.

If anything serious is happening with your son's health there will be a way to get information to you; however, it is a very "touchy" subject given Health Privacy laws enacted by our favorite past & present members of Congress. This is an area that can mean personal fines of thousands of dollars for the individuals involved in the disclosure. As said in many threads the health care provided at KP is top notch and they have one of the best hospitals in the country very nearby for any 'serious' issues. There is also 24hr EMT coverage provided by midshipmen who are certified NY state EMT's.

    No call

I don't know what I would do???? Honestly....... I am proned to freak out mode but my kids don't appreciate it.....I would...and I don't know your faith???? Trust that he is in good hands and more importantly in the hands of a living God.......There is no way in hell they are going to let anything happen to these young Americans who want to serve their country....If it were me....I'd be on a plane to NY but then to arrive and find my son mad at me for freaking out....You are not alone....he's in good hands...He's strong...you raised him to be strong....Now it's your turn.....you can do it. You taught him everthing he knows...he will reach for that and be stronger. You are in my prayers......This is coming from a single mom in Fl who is scared to death about flying to NY solo and navigating me from airport to hotel to campus...if they can do it we can too.....be stong and just pray for him. xoxoxoxo

I cannot echo this advice more strongly. These candidates are trying to become military officers. It is time for us parents to cut the apron strings, park the helicopters and stand on the sidelines. Except in cases of family emergencies there are few reasons to contact the Academy.

is your son playing a sport? if so, i would call his coach. after our son called home on sunday and dropped a bomb that he had hurt his shoulder when we hung up the phone we immediately called his wrestling coach. our son had injured this shoulder a year and a half ago and had to have pins put in and couldn't wrestle for nine months. so we were very concerned when he told us this and then he quickly said, "its ok". the wrestling coach found garrick monday morning talked to him and then called us back monday before 9am. i can only imagine how you must feel. its like other people have said though if there was something wrong you would have heard by now. if your son is an athlete then this pt is nothing to worry about. just to hear his voice though would have been reassuring to you. thank goodness we have the pics to look forward to. hang in there its almost over!!!

DON'T CALL THE ACADEMY! This is 2 weeks out of their lives. They all will be fine.
I know my son would NEVER call me again if I called attention to him by contacting the school.
When you dropped your candidate off at KP you were retired as Mommy and Daddy. I know it's forced retirement, but I guarantee the rewards will be great. Trust that you did your job and give your kid the respect he has earned by staying out of his business. It is now time that you wait to be contacted. There is no place for "helicopter parenting" here.
My husband is a graduate (78) and son is in the class of 2011. My husband still sails so I can tell you by personal experience that you will get used to this. No news is good news.
Also don't forget the DIs were plebes last year and the year before. This isn't prison, it's a choice your kid made. He/she WILL succeed. TRUST them.

There are many candidates and parents who do not have military background or family members who have attended KP. The letter from the Commandant dated July 9, 2009 specifically states that, "Each Candidate will be permitted a brief telephone call on Sunday, 19 July and again on Sunday, 26, July." This certainly did not infer that candidates might be allowed to call on those dates, but rather that they would be allowed to call.

This is another case where the experience of those who know KP is invaluable to those of us who are new on this journey. Thanks for setting us straight:thumb:
