I have started my Nomination process by contacting my local Congressman, but he doesn't start Interviews until November 1st, and King's Point begins accepting candidates on October 1st, but how can a candidate be accepted without a nomination?

Except for CGA, appointments to all the other service academies require a nomination. There are a variety of nomination sources including MOCs, the President, Vice President, and ROTC. Presidential nominations seem to available first. Many MOCs don't announce theirs until the end of the year.

There are also LOAs!

Rare, but in existence.

Do all the Service Academies use LOAs and if so, to what degree? I get that they are rare, but I remember reading that USMA at one point in the past used quite a few LOAs.

They may...I can't speak for Kings Point. USAFA/USMA/USNA...yes, they have/do use LOA's. I have NO idea what USCGA does as their process is completely different.

But as I tell folks: forget the LOA!!! Work toward the end goal, always updating and excelling. If your package is "scored high enough" the SA will make you a "presumptive" candidate and you'll go through the process (DODMERB, CFA, etc.)

You'll still have to obtain a nomination...that won't go away as it's a legal requirement.

As to "what degree" the various SA's use LOA's...I think only their admissions department would know that and I doubt they'll tell anyone. I work very closely with USAFA/RRS (admissions) and they do NOT tell me/us much at all!
