Nominations for Athletes

When I went through the recruiting process it was all very vague... From my understanding, an LOA is key for athletes. ONLY the admissions board can give out LOAs to candidates, but for highly sought-after athletes the coaches can kind of "help" that process along. Then, once you receive an LOA, the respective academy will "find you a nomination." Once you have the LOA it is very hard for a nominating source to turn you down. I also heard from a USAFA grad that the VP nominations are basically meant for athletes. The system isn't designed to cater to athletes but it ends up working out this way. The Vice President nominates based on rankings compiled by the academies. All the academies have to do is rank their athletic recruits at the top of their list and they basically get auto-nominated. I wasn't able to find verification of this information online but it's just bits of what I've heard over the last year. Personally, I was told by a coach that I wouldn't need any assistance getting in because of my academics and so I never learned any more about the mysterious help that athletes can receive. Hope this helps!

There are no lack of people who will provide you hunches/guesses or just bad information about the application process. It is faulty reasoning to assume how you think the process might have worked for you is the way it works for every recruited athlete. As mentioned in prior posts above, there are only a VERY small number of slots for recruited athletes even though many more get 'recruited'.

I totally agree, just wanted to share what I've been told about the topic in case it helps anybody or reinforces anything someone else has been told.
