Nominations-Is it a done deal

We also just learned today that our DS did not get a congressional nomination (1st congressional district VA - 96 requests, over 600 for entire state). He had only a couple of pieces left to submit on the USNA and USAFA applications which he was in the process of finishing up this week. He had waited until he got his private pilot certificate (to include in the activities/resume sections), which he just did this week. He had his fitness tests scheduled for later this month. Everything else is complete, including the medical.

As I understand from these posts, once you do not get the nomination, there is no further recourse, other than contacting the congressman (in the event something opens up) as stated earlier in the post. My question is this: is there any reason to complete the applications? It does not seem like there is. He is also applying to several colleges with ROTC and has gotten into one of them already. We are all new to this, and are not sure what to do. Thanks.

Did your son apply for a nomination from your Senators and VP? If he did and hasn't heard back from them yet, it's still possible for a nomination. I'd still complete my application. If he didn't, I'm not sure there's anything he can do. :frown: Perhaps somebody else could give you a definite answer.

However, there's still NROTC and AFROTC scholarships he can apply for that do not require a nomination. I'm not sure what the timetable and deadlines are for them, but it's worth looking into. He could win a 4 year scholarship, but they also give out smaller (less years/$) as well I believe. It's possible for him to win a scholarship, go to college/ROTC on it, then reapply next year for USNA and USAFA again. ROTC also gives him another avenue to apply and possibly receive a nomination. His DODMERB qualification is also good for two years, so he wouldn't need to re-qualify next year.

Our son also applied to the senators, and was denied by one so far. We don't have a lot of hope for the other because there were over 600 applying in VA. He didn't apply to the VP because it seemed like that was extremely remote. He did apply for the Navy and Air Force ROTC scholarships, and we haven't heard anything on those yet. Thanks for your advice!

He still should apply for the Vice President nomination. Everyone is qualified for it, and, if you don't receive an appointment through any of your MOC's, the academy might still want you and charge you to the Vice President. It does happen.

So lets say that I receive no nom to AFA, am I out or can the sup nominate me if I was an athlete or highly qualified or do I have to have a nom another than his?

I'm pretty sure the supe can nominate you, but you are correct about the athlete part I believe. That's where they can pull a nomination from for athletes they really want, but who didn't receive a congressional or presidential nomination. The supe's noms are generally reserved for the end of the timetable for candidates that the SA really wants, but couldn't get a regular nomination. There's not many of them. I'm not sure, but I think the otherwise "highly qualified" could also get it. I believe those who the SA really want usually get an LOA far ahead of time and that can help sway the congressperson to nominate them. The VP's always worth a shot. The application isn't too complicated and it's all online. And c'mon, it's free. What's there to lose? :thumb:

vp nomination is very easy - its online and can be done quickly - what does it hurt to do it? just think of the number of people who applied to an academy and thought it was such a long shot they didnt apply for vp nom. raises the odds for you. not sure what the deadline is but i think it is middle to end of january. go visit Biden's white house site today! don't need to send recommendations for it- just make sure you submitted the letters of endorsement to the academy.

Interesting...when my DS submitted VP nomination in the early fall he had to attach 5 letters of recommendation on the VP site and send electronically. Guess they changed it since then.

It has changed since the Fall.
BTW - you never had to attach five letters of recommendation. Just submitting one would (and did in our case) allow the form to be submitted.
