After an amazing visit to Norwich, DS accepted his four year AROTC Scholarship there! I just sent in the deposit to hold his place. What a journey this has been and will continue to be! I'm beyond thankful for all of the assistance we have received through this board, and I hope to glean as much information as I can from past/current Norwich parents!

Congrats!!! I met someone at a VMI dinner that was also visiting Norwich this week..... How was the weather?

VERY cold! We kept asking him to text pictures and he would reply, "Why?, It's just lots and lots of snow :)"

This was not the school we thought he would choose, so we are still in a little bit of shock. He loved the people he met, said they all were so funny and very welcoming.

meh maybe our DS's will meet each other there! My DS checks the weather there every day....unfortunately for us, the weather here has actually been colder and snowier many of the days!

I'm currently a freshman in Norwich, so if you (or anyone else) has any questions, please feel free to ask me!

Thanks Frankie, and congratulations to meh126's DS. We throughly enjoyed our college visit to Norwich last fall.

Frankie, if you had to name two things that you like most about Norwich, what would they be? Which branch are you, and are you contracted?

This sounds like a dumb question but what do you need to deposit if you have a 4 year scholarship?

The 4 yr scholarship covers tuition only (or room & board only if you choose). You still have to pay the initial deposit to save your spot and register for classes.

Probably a housing deposit, as scholarships are typically used to cover tuition and fees.

Absolutely correct, At Norwich and all colleges, ROTC provides money to cover some tuition and uniform expenses as well as a monthly stipend.

A student bringing an ROTC scholarship to Norwich will also be awarded the I.D. White Scholarship, which covers room and board. You have to pay the deposit but get on the phone with admissions for the details of the I. D. White Scholarship. Make sure the housing bill is covered sooner rather than later.

Congrats!

After paying DS's deposit (they do call it a housing deposit, and yes you have to pay it even with the ID White room and board scholarship), we received an adjust financial aid package. On it it shows exactly what will be left to pay (uniform fee to the tune of $4200 which I believe may have been split over 2 years). It also includes eligibility for the Direct Loans (either subsidized or unsubsidized) in case you need those loans to cover those fees. However, I did not see where you could send the paper back and decline the loan, so I will call at some point and ask how to do that.

Which came in a big plastic box that DS uses as a coffee table now. I think there was also about $1000 additional each year not covered by scholarship, fees or something or other. Will need boots, shoes and many other things.
Life at an SMC!

Another nice thing about summer opportunities in AROTC is you can sometimes get free ACUs and boots.:thumb:

I like the box idea! Right now we are starting to look at boots and the low 1/4's on-line. We started talking about running shoes, trying to come up with the best kind to get. I think we will go to one of those stores that deal with running shoes all of the time to see if they can recommend a good one based on his foot and running on hills - right now the shoes he has are used for flat running on a track....not really the same conditions as Norwich. So between the boots, low 1/4's, running shoes and new soccer cleats....we are up to $500 on footwear before he leaves the house!

Congrats meh! That is great that your son has chosen and is happy with his choice. All the best!

It adds up but it is worth it! I think my son ordered his first boots online. He must have 15 pairs now. Best wishes on the fall soccer season!

15 pairs??? Oh my....but I guess the way my kids have always gone through shoes....I can see it! Thanks for the soccer wishes - we may be spending a lot of time in New England this fall as I cannot imagine NOT watching him play (or sit the bench as the case may be!). Pretty sure that the games we can't get to will be the ones he gets to play in....

The Norwich in house scholarship for room and board is now called the David & Dixie Hollis Scholarship. No longer called the ID White Scholarship, but it still covers room and board for those coming in with ROTC scholarships. You have to maintain a certain GPA ( I think 3.0) to keep the David & Dixie Hollis active.
The $250 housing deposit is required each semester.

My DS has yet to hear from USNA - but if the dreaded TWE arrives, Norwich is on his list. He did not get a NROTC scholarship, but would like to join the unit anyway. A few questions, is that possible and for current students, do you like Norwich? He has been accepted into the Honors program, has a decent academic scholarship and would join swim team. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

My DS is going to Norwich next year. I know you can definitely be in the Corps of Cadets and participate in ROTC without an ROTC scholarship. If frankie does not jump in here, he is a current student and has mentioned several times that folks can ask him questions - we did and he was quite helpful.
