DS found out today that he has been accepted to Norwich, to his chosen major and the Corps of Cadets lifestyle. Love these rolling admissions! I also think it is great that Admissions called him personally to congratulate him and tell him to expect the letter in the mail.

Congratulations to him and to you! I was just yesterday checking out various ROTC FTX pictures on their FB page, admiring the fall colors in the background. Their parent association page looks lively and useful too. Want my advice? Make him get ready for PT so that the first month isn't physically killer. If he's REALLY physically fit and ready for the regular PT (as well as "extra" PT), that first year will be SO MUCH EASIER. Running, pushups, situps, pullups, weights -- get him ready. Now's the time to get mentally ready for that cadet lifestyle. No time for senioritis! Congrats again!

Thanks all! He has applied to several schools with rolling admissions. NU is his first choice "Plan B" school, however, he also wants to play his sport, so that will all be tied into the final decision making.
Speaking of being in shape - he is very in shape now, but what about swimming? He is not a swimmer and I am trying to convince him to join the swim team this winter....how much swimming is required your first year for ROTC (and USMA if anyone knows)?

I don't think there's too much swimming involved. I know you have to pass the water survival test where you swim with full gear, but as long as he can swim decently I think he'll be fine. That's certainly not something to join the swim team to prepare for, it's more like dog-paddling.

That is good to know, however, his grandpa was a medic in WW2, and the only reason he survived in "real life" water survival tests was because he had a backpack full of plasma bags holding him up....so you see my concern. It is still a running joke in the family!

Norwich is a wonderful school, and the area is just beautiful.

Congrats to your DS also Georgia Mom! Yes, we will be starting the "chart" of acceptances to track scholarship and financial aid offers, and the pros and cons of each school.

Checked my email today, and had one from Norwich offering me a free application with no letters of recommendation required. It was too good of an offer to turn down, so I just completed it and can't wait to hear from them!

Good luck! We have been so impressed with the admissions process at Norwich! DS received a personal call from his admissions officer telling him he had been accepted and then a beautiful certificate came in the mail three days later. Also they send their merit funds letter within a week of acceptance. DS's was very generous. He will be going to an overnight in January to check it out.

What were your son's stats to get such a nice merit package? I could definitely not afford Norwich at sticker price, but I have pretty good grades and test scores so perhaps a scholarship could make it affordable.

3.8 unweighted GPA, top 10% of class, mostly honor and AP classes
4 years varsity swimmer (4 letters)- two years captain
3 years track, 3 cross country, 1 varsity (lettered) football
4 years NHS, ASB officer, Boys State
not great SAT's and ACT's (ACT's were so terrible we didn't send them out, LOL)
I think he's amazing, of course, because I'm his mom but when I read the stats people post on here, I'm astonished! I think how in the world do they have time to do all that? My son has some volunteer hours but honestly he leaves for school at 6am, gets home from practice at 6 or 7, eats, tries to meet with his AP study groups, does homework till 10 and then sleeps! No time for orphanage building in Uganda ;)
You kids are light years more impressive than teens were when I went to HS!

meh- my DS just got another letter from admissions, this time in a package with a "Corps of Cadets" t-shirt.
Strength-my DS got a top merit scholarship also, with a 97 average, top 10% of class, Eagle Scout, Boy's State, sports (letters plus captain), but low SAT/ACT reading and writing scores.
Jar-congrats! Maybe you 2 will meet up someplace!

Congrats to all accepted to the class of 2018 at Norwich. Try to do one of the overnight visits. A lot of insight given. Make sure you are working out to be ready in August.

    Best Wishes
