Norwich

Congrats to all accepted to the class of 2018 at Norwich. Try to do one of the overnight visits. A lot of insight given. Make sure you are working out to be ready in August.

Best Wishes

Very important.

If you guys need any info, I am currently a Rook at Norwich so I'll be able to give the best insight on how things'll be for next years class and what they'll go through.

DS found out today that he has been accepted to Norwich, to his chosen major and the Corps of Cadets lifestyle. Love these rolling admissions! I also think it is great that Admissions called him personally to congratulate him and tell him to expect the letter in the mail.

My DS was accepted to Norwich last week as well. We had just visited Norwich during the Veterans Day open house on Nov. 9th. We really liked it. Nice campus. Traditional looking New England college (with newer and older looking buildings) nestled in the mountains of VT. For SMC's he also applied to Citadel and VMI. Those are his top 3 choices. Waiting on Citadel and VMI letters. We visited Citadel in April, and hope to make it to VMI if we know he gets an acceptance so he can compare the 3 colleges.

He will also apply to NC State and USC, Columbia (his 2 state choices). Waiting to see what happens with the NROTC scholarship process.

But, if nothing else works out, he would be happy to attend Norwich. Just like someone mentioned earlier, they have great one on one communications with the applicant, sent a nice acceptance letter, and even just sent my son a Holiday card from the office of admissions.

Nice Strength and DS of navyburd! Accepted to the Corps of Cadets? If so they may even send you a nice t-shirt in the mail!

Well the bags are packed....I am being very brave - sending DS and DH off on a 7 hour journey for an overnight at Norwich....at least there does not appear to be snow in the forecast!

Girl's night out! Woohoo!!!! :shake:

Best Wishes. I may add my DS got a lot of insight after his overnight at Norwich. Tell him to have fun and ask any questions he may have.

I have a whole bunch of leftover wine from Thanksgiving, so just may be inviting the girls over!
The overnight is for a sport, so I am hoping he will be with a Corps of Cadets team member, if they can do that.
On another note,we were looking at a list for what Rooks should and should not bring, and on the "should" list was an iron and a floor model ironing board...do the kids really all bring an ironing board? That is a lot of ironing boards per room. I got a laugh out of it. That could make a very interesting graduation present - the aunts are always asking what to get!

Hang tough, Soccmom!

Your DS is going to love the experience. It's a great school and the Corps of Cadets there is top notch.

My DS did one of the "leadership weekends" there and I had that sinking feeling when I dropped him off. So I feel you. :shake: But of course, he LOVED every minute of it... sleeping on the hard floor, survival/combat swimming in the pool, the awesome 1v1 opportunities to ask questions and learn about the school and it's mission, and the almost instant bonds he forged with the other like-minded participants.

If a young person is even remotely interested in what an SMC (or by extension SA) experience might be like, the Leadership Weekend program and overnight visits at Norwich are a must-do experience!

In any case, congrats again to all those 2018ers attending Norwich this summer!

Haha - I know DS will have a great time...it is DH I am worried about - he has driven there before, but I am the map reader and co-pilot. I printed him mapquest directions and maps and he has the GPS, which he hates....but it is programmed to get him there!
The back seat is full of snacks, gas tank is full, and I even went to the car wash this morning!

OK, so DS and DH made it to Norwich. Minor glitches, like DS forgetting his coat (it just happened to be 60 here when they left...down to 33 right now!) and a few things needed to play soccer....DH had taken 2 coats, and Walmart came to the rescue for the rest!
So far so good, and they seem mighty impressed that DS was offered a 4 yr AROTC scholarship in the 1st Board.

Glad to hear the bumps in the road weren't too serious!

Re: The ironing board. DS is at "Big State U" and brought an ironing board and iron so he could keep those uniforms pressed. Worked out pretty well for him as he took in ironing from the other guys in his freshman dorm and made himself a few bucks! Of course with the plethora of ironing boards and accouterments at Norwich I doubt your DS will have that opportunity.

Not sure about Norwich, but when DS first reported to UNG, "ironing board" was on the list of things that roommates should divvy. Like, you get the ironing board, iron, cleaning supplies, etc, and the other guy gets the fridge. But when we went to Walmart, there were no ironing boards left. And if you know Dahlonega at all, you know that Walmart is the only place to get an ironing board for miles and miles, especially a problem for cadets with no car. Sure wish we'd have just gotten that ironing board ahead of time is all I'm saying.

Good news is pre-FROG, DS was, shall we say, laundry-challenged. But when he came home for Thanksgiving break, he wouldn't let me near the laundry room. Bet you wouldn't hear that story too often from a guy who went to school in a non-military environment.

Norwich has a linens and laundry plan...I am thinking this may be a good thing for at least the first year. Looking at the on-line list of what to bring and not bring, it does not say anything about civilian clothes....so are they in uniform on weekends too? I know I am getting ahead of the game here, as he hasn't even decided if he is going there...but curious!

No civvies for rooks until they are recognized. Full size ironing board. Doing laundry is a nice break for the rooks...I don't recommend the linen or laundry plan. I can discuss further if he ends up going there.

Thanks philmont! That is good to know...what about if they are playing a fall sport - does that pre-season start before Rook Arrival? and would they be in civvies for that portion, if they do come early?

If he goes early for pre-season it would be before rook arrival and he will wear civvies the whole time!

I may add send nothing extra than what is on the list. Extra things will sit until break in a very dark room. A very short haircut is good to get the day or so before he goes.

Good luck with his choice

DS had a great visit. Actually spent the night with a rook. He still really likes it there, so I am thinking that right now it is his top choice.
