Notice of Waiver Request?

Hi all - happy Easter! My son is an applicant for both AF and USMA and has been medically disqualified since December (history of shoulder instability). He has contacted his RC several times and all he can get out of them is "no waiver requested yet". My question is this - will the portals for either USMA and AF update from "disqualified" to "waiver requested" if they send his file through for a waiver consideration? Or is it possible, a waiver will be requested without him even knowing it was requested? He checks his 3 portals (USMA, AF and DoDMERB) daily to make sure he doesn't miss something.

At this point, he has pretty much given up hope - however we do know that they are still requesting waivers for applicants as one of his classmates just had a waiver requested earlier this week -- I would have thought it was way to late in the game to start the waiver process....

My daughter has a medical DQ and she say that anytime DoDMERB does anything, they email her. She received notification of the waiver request and instructions on what she needed to do next.

Our experience is your DS would be notified once a waiver request was initiated by USMA or USAFA. Evidence was on DS' SA portal and DoDMERB portal as I recall.

From my DS’s own experience. He received a letter in his portal that USMA was beginning a waiver request on his behalf. That was in early Feb. A few weeks later he was informed that the waiver was granted. Again, it all was spelled out in letters from USMA admissions in his portal.

DS was also DQ’d for shoulder instability by all 3. We heard from AF right away they were pursuing waiver ( end of Jan). Then heard nothing, they asked for nothing so he sent an email to AF admissions counselor, then within that week we got an email and portal updated to waiver granted. The counselor never replied back so not sure if he had anything to do with it or just the timing worked out. Who knows! USMA and USNA have said “Pending” the whole time. At the beginning of February, DS emailed RC and the reply was similar to your’s “Not at this time”. So there were a few others higher on the slate and we were also told that only a certain amount of waivers go for certain DQ codes (ie: so you don’t have 100 cadets in the same year w/ bad shoulders). DS just rec’d TWE from USMA this weekend. Thankfully he has AROTC scholarship to soften the blow.

Still holding out for AF!! Nervous though bc kid next town over was offered appointment to all 3 SA’s but accepting USNA. I don’t know if DS still has a chance on his slate ( like did his chances maybe just go from 1 out of 10 down to 1 out of 9?). Good luck to everyone still waiting... As Dory says “just keep swimming. Just keep swimming.”
