Hi, I called admissions today and one point I asked about was when I would know if the Academy deemed me 3Qed.
They just said I was qualified based on my scores.
Also, I inquired about my CFA and they said it's not pass/fail but just how well you do.

So USAFA does not tell a candidate if they are qualified scholastically?

Yes they do. When they said you were "Qualified", they meant academically (Scholastically) as well as physically. (DODMRB and CFA). (THUS 3Q). Realize that "QUALIFIED" means at least the BARE MINIMUM. Doesn't mean you're one of the most competitive or anything. Just qualified.

As for pilot qualified, they determine that after you are at the academy. Best of luck. Mike....

Also, in your online application, once you are 100% completed with it, it will say qualified on it if I'm not mistaken. That's means 3Q. But you are correct that CFA is not a pass or fail. The only real fail is if you can't do ANY of a category; e.g. 0 pull-ups. Or an unreasonable number (Subjective). E.g. 1 mile run 14 minutes. Basketball throw 10 feet. etc... Other than that, it's graded on what you accomplished.

The current application says the following:
"*When you submit your application you become a "Prospect." When USAFA processes your application you become an "Applicant." Should USAFA deem you competitive and/or you receive a nomination, you will become a "Candidate." Note that you may receive a nomination and still not be deemed competitive by USAFA."

Nothing about "Qualified". Does anyone else have "Qualified" as their status?

Does the AFA send out 3Q letters in addition to informing their applicants that they are considered a "Candidate" in their on-line status?

I stand corrected on the application saying qualified. It's been 3 years since I looked at the online applications.

I haven't even completed my application yet (waiting on those essays to write themselves...) and my status is "Candidate". Did my attending Summer Seminar have anything to do with that? Also, did the Academy take note of my attending the Seminar or am I on a completely new page (meaning no prior record that I have done any sort of application)?

I remember that if you attended Summer Seminar then you most likely were deemed a candidate in July when the full application opened.
Your Summer Seminar application included your standardized test scores which were used by Admissions to determine if you were strong enough to possess a full file.

My son did not attend Summer Seminar and also became a candidate before finishing his application. There must be some criteria other than Summer Seminar that the USAFA uses to determine the status change to "Candidate".

Somewhere, the website gives stats on the last entering class. It lists applications, candidates, qualified candidates, accepted, entered, or something like that. I know it has qualified as one of the categories and the number was about 2/3 of the candidate number. My son's status was changed to candidate before his app was complete and he did not attend summer seminar. I think it was basically academics, i.e. grades and test scores.

I think in my son's case it was based on the personality of his father.
The USAFA may consider it an example of overcoming a great personal obstacle.

I meant that if you attended Summer Seminar then you were pretty much guaranteed to become a Candidate as you were already in the system and admissions had an interest in you.
Of course, many other competitive applicants became Candidates without the Summer Seminar.

    My status recently changed to
    Your Status: Candidate
Your Appointment Status: Letter of Assurance

so as far as being qualified goes, there is some hint as to whether you are or not.
AVT: Summer seminar has little to no weight in the admissions process as to my understanding. all it does is get you into the system a bit earlier than other applicants. also, they consider most the test scores and resume you sent in with your Summer Seminar app/PCQ in order to award candidacy. i remember reading somewhere that there were minimum SAT/ACT scores that they were looking for to become a candidate...... im not sure

Cool cool. This whole process is so nerve-wracking and stressful. But hopefully it will all be worth it in the end!

Just to clarify a small point.

If you are selected to attend Summer Seminar you WILL be an "automatic" candidate the following year.

    Not Competitive

    Hello all
    My DS application reads.
Your Status: Applicant* (your application is under consideration)
    Your Application is: Not Competitive

Would the reason for the NOT Competitive status be because of not submitting items required? CFA/interview not completed/still waiting on teacher recommendations

    Thanks for any advise

I would definitely have your daughter call admissions at the USAFA or her ALO and ask specifically what area they consider her "Not Competitive". If it is just a matter of needing to submit a document....no big deal. If it is something else then you need to try to address it ASAP.
    Good Luck!
