DS was appointed to USMA Class of 2016 last week and is wondering how he notifies AROTC Cadet Command that he will NOT be using his awarded 4 year scholarship. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Congrats on the USMA appointment!!! My DS was in the exact same situation last year. I would have your DS send an email to the following (explaining that he has decided to accept the USMA appointment):

1) Cadet Command;

2) Personalized thank-you email to the AROTC ROO who interviewed your DS, thanking him or her for the opportunity; and

3) Personalized thank-you email to each AROTC PMS/ROO that your DS has met during his college exploration journey, so they can cross your son off their list and won't be expecting him in the fall.

Emails are easier for the ROOs to forward to whoever needs to receive the information, but a letter will work as well. Also, your son should nevertheless receive a letter from Cadet Command, asking him to confirm his intentions. Just send that in (or don't respond) when that happens.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the suggestions! He already emailed several of the ROOS at colleges who had been on his "short" list and thanked them for the support and got wonderful notes back from them offering their good wishes and even offering to continue to help him as he begins this journey with the Army. Can't say enough good things about our experiences dealing with USMA and also AROTC--the support and guidance has been amazing and we're truly grateful that he's been given this great opportunity.

Definitely needs to notify CC (train2lead@usacc.army.mil), and he should let the school he accepted the scholarship for. If he is quick enough CC can reoffer that scholarship this week. Congrats to your son.

That's exactly what we plan to do--it was important to him (and us) that he quickly try and get that money reallocated to another person who is still waiting. We know just how hard the wait can be and want to give another student the same opportunity! Best wishes to all waiting to hear some good news--we're putting another scholarship back in the mix!

Clarkson...do you have any inside information and/or knowledge about the offers going out this week for sure?
