My DS (2016 hopeful) is wondering if there is a snowball's chance that any plebes will be allowed to attend the Notre Dame/Navy game next September. It is September 1, and I just can't conceive of plebes being flown to Dublin. Any thoughts?

Sure hope in these tough financial times that the Naval Academy isn't considering flying the brigade to Ireland for a simple football game. If they are, better not be on the tax payer's dime.

The only people getting their travel paid for is most likely going to be the football team and D&B, and I think that comes out of NAAA funding (at least football's would).
I'm doubtful they'd even open that MO (movement order) up to plebes, so if your son really wants to go he'd have to be football, D&B, or some other ECA that "needs" to go.

    That makes sense.

For the past few years, at least, Plebes have not been allowed to travel on a MO until after 6 week grades are in (and Plebe is SAT). That excludes Plebes who are part of an official function, i.e., member of a varsity team or D&B.

Plebes won't be allowed on the Ireland MO next year (with the exception of D&B, football, cheerleading?, and pipes & drums). That came directly from the mouths of the people in charge of planning it.

I heard that a certain number of mids (not team, cheerleaders, etc). will be allowed to attend the game. Signup is based on seniority. The mid I talked to said that the allotment won't last beyond some 2/C.

Thanks everyone. I wouldn't have imagined that plebes would be going. I do see large numbers of Mids at the ND game each year, which I've assumed are upperclassmen, but I thought I'd ask just to be certain.

Everyone goes (plebes included) if it's a "home" game in Baltimore/NY/wherever, but if it's away it's an MO.

    Bolding, my emphasis.
Cart waaaaaaaaaaaaay before the horse. How about securing a Nom and an Appointment? Those 2 tickets being punched is what your son should concern himself with at this point.

I'm sure he can focus on getting a nom and appointment while also entertaining the (albeit nonexistent) possibility of going on the Ireland MO. It's ok to think of cool things you might be able to do at the Naval Academy before you actually get in.

    Sorry 2016

The academy is not going to send the entire brigade to Dublin. There was a meeting last week and the only people going on full NAAA funding are the football team, cheerleaders, and D&B/ Pipe and Drums. The MO will only have a little bit of funding, but they are trying to work a deal with a few colleges in Dublin to host MIDN. They are also trying to charter a flight with Aer Lingus that MIDN would contribute to instead of flying commercial. The class of 2016 will not be allowed to go, per the CDR who runs operations. They might allow upper class who do not get on the MO to pay there own way. They are still in the planning stages, but it is definite that 2016 will not be going. They will only be two weeks out of Plebe summer, and would not have earned the privilege to travel with the brigade yet.

Thanks again everyone - I would have been shocked if plebes were going, but I just thought I'd ask. If my DS is a plebe next year, my wife and I may make the trip regardless.

"Breadcrumbs," thanks for the thoughts. But please know that a substantial number of inquiries on this forum are predicated upon a candidate receiving and accepting an appointment and range from the fanciful to basic. I'd also suggest that it is more politic to know what and whom you're talking about (e.g., what a candidate has or is doing about securing an appointment) before telling parents what their kids should "concern" themselves - lest you come off the wrong way. Best of luck to you!
