Yesterday I took my son to apply for his passport, thought we would get a jump start on all the little things that need to get done before indoc. So the lady helping us asked him what he needed his passport for, he replied "I'm going to the United States Merchant Marine Academy" and then she says.... "Oh, is that like a summer camp or something?" He just smiled and said "yeah, kinda like summer camp". And so it begins..."You are going where? For what? I thought you wanted to go to college!"

    Best Kept Secret

Just mention that it is one of the five U.S. Service Academies. You might have to name them if they are not familiar with them. That should suffice. Then you have just educated another member of this great nation. Congratulations on the appointment!! You must be very proud!

A couple of weeks ago I was talking to a guy (ahile at the Post office), he had his ID out to get a package and I notice that it was a Merchant Marine ID card. So I mentioned my daughter has applied to the USMMA.... he looked at me and said which one ?!?!?!?!?!?

I told him there was only one USMMA, then he wanted to tell me I was wrong and that there was many... I explained it was a SA like Wespoint, Annapolis..etc.. and he was dumbfounded.. he thought I was an idiot (the look on his face said so).. I told him to look up USMMA.edu when he got to a computer!

I figured for sure this guy should know... WOW...:yllol:

I tell people that I am proud that my son was accepted into one of our countries Service Academies. The response then goes to what is that or like West Point or USNA. This becomes my opportunity to educate. I guess we need a movie!!!

I know I know..... It does seem that KP is such a mystery to most BUT to be very honest.... I must admit that I've also experienced several times when wearing a KP sweat-shirt out and about or in a parking lot where someone notices the KP sticker on the car when out of the blue, people DO know what it is & what it means to us. Had a lady come up outta no where to tell me, with much enthusiasm, that both her hubby & son graduated from KP or that a stranger offers congrats for having a son who is wearing a uniform is gaining a great education to use for our country. It humbles that old pride thing as a parent, knowing I had little to do with it. You'll experience such a mix of folks and its all part of the experience of being involved with Kings Point. I look forward to explaining how my KP is a Coast Guard Ensign in 150 days. Well......Here we go again! I look forward to it for each of you newcomers as well. Many congrats!

    KP Movie

The only movie that I know of that even mentions KP is, Action In The North Atlantic, starring Humphrey Bogart. The film is somewhat dated, but it is still worth spending a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon on. I bought a copy on Amazon.com for less than $10.00. It's reasonably accurate and even give a nod of recognition to the heroics of Midshipman O'Hara. My S just groaned..."they made us watch this in Indoc"

I love the part where Bogie reads latitude and longitude directly off the sextant...in the rain.
