My DS received a DQ from DoDMERB for intussuception surgery performed on him when he was 10 weeks old. The surgery was 100% successful and he has had no other issues for 17 years. Yet, the USAFA, USNA, AFROTC and NROTC did not request a waiver for him so now he is not eligible to even join Florida State's AFROTC. Does this mean that his dream of being a military officer and pilot are shattered? What avenues are left for him? He was interested in intel as well. His intended major is Mandarin Chinese with either an Arabic language or Military History minor.

Any suggestions are more than welcome as I try to steer him into thinking of a new career path.

Just from my DoDMERB experience your DS still seems eligible to pass. I have had reconstructive femur surgery, femur plate removal, and a few other major surgeries and I still passed my DoDMERB. I went to my appointment and the doctor didn't ask any question. Just got his part done and submitted the forms. A few weeks later I found out I had failed. DoDMERB sent along an attached letter detailing what I would have to send back to pass the standard. I proceeded to do this 3 more times continually failing. Finally after multiple tries and enough paperwork (I guess) I was able to receive full medical clearance to USAFA. I am now going to be joining the Class of 2016. Just keep up on all the forms they ask for you to send back and you should be fine. My entire process took about 3 months.
